Subject: Engine rattle with 87 octane gas
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 99 SLT with the 5.2L V8. I noticed when my engine gets hot and I am accelerating hard or I step on the gas I get a rattle in the engine that sounds like a diesel rattle. I finally decided to put 93 octane gas in it and that took care of the problem. Is this normal for these engines? Why would that happen with 87 octane?

Thanks

its called engine knock... there is no knock sensor on our daks to prevent it so the only ways to get around it is up the octane (such as you did), run colder thermostat such as a 180 degree (stock is 195), runner colder plugs such as autolite 3923. The best option if you dont want to always be buying premium is to get the autolites.

I have been reading a lot of posts about gas and octane rating and I am pretty impressed at the wealth of information on here. Let me revise my question because for the most part it has been awnsered, and thanks for your post.

Would very bad pinging with 87 octane mean there is a problem somewhere in the engine, perhaps with ignition timing or deposit buildup?

Thanks Again

i dont think there is a problem you could fix... maybe a computer flash but like i said, just try some new colder plugs first if you wanna run the cheap stuff

Try getting your gas somewhere else, first. I have noticed the Premium ARCO gas available at the local AM/PM stores causes my motrocycle (modified SR500 with WHite Brothers Perfomance kit throughout)to knock like a bandito. If I purchase the Shell Premium, it doesn't spark knock at all.

I believe the octane ratings are a close guesstimate at best... The ARCO never seems to have the actual octane level as the Shell gasoline for the same advertised rating.

How much is Premium in the USA right now?
I am paying $4.08 a gallon right now here in Germany. Thats $1.089 per LITER at the pump.
Germans believe in the road taxes for the unlimited speed limits here.
I do get a discount on 400 LITERs a month at $.473 per liter, thats $1.797 a gallon. If I need more gas than that its full price.

Gas is about 1.40 a gallon for premium in north Alabama. I think I am going to go with a lower thermostat and cooler plugs so I can run the cheap stuff, thanks!

Thanks intensedak3.9,

Thats the area I'm most concerned with TEXAS. I will be coming back to SA in about 2-3 more years. When I left there I was paying $.98 for Premium. I guess all good things must come to an end.
Thanks All,
Lynn

I had the same problem with my '97 5.2 w/144k and found ways to improve performance and the knocking and pinging, but I still plan on rebuilding. ford motor sports injectors and a 24hr carbon soak for the clynders helped the most with the pinging

if i set my timing at 10 btc i can run 87 without ping, but sluggish.. 16 btc with 89 octane and i can run 20 btc with 92-93 octane, alot more HP . 1986-1987 3.9 carb model. . . i can't use gas with corn alcohol pings more and dries up rubber seals in carb. . .. 92 octane Indianapolis is 1.56 per gallon. . . I heard in 88 and newer models timing is not adjustable. . .also at 10 btc engine will only turn 3700 rpm. at 20 btc i can get 4200 rpm.

It is realy called detonation. the higher the octane the slower it burns and with 87 it burns up to quik and caused it to ping. You can burn a pistion up if you dont watch.
