Has anyone tried cutting 2-3" off the factory shifter after machining the shifter knob threads deeper?

I am interested in the modifications necessary to fit the Hurst shifter into my 2001 CC Dakota with 4.7, thank you for your time and interest in this!

I loved the difference the Hurst made in my late 70s
Nova, although the DC shifter is better than the crap from GM (at least in the past)

Help me here Paul, I have been searching, but cannot find a real how-to. Although I am not a mechanic, I have friends who are, and they are good. I would like to have something to hand to them.

Thanks for the response! I am getting addicted to this site!

Scottyboy - below are excerpts from previous posts re. the install - you can either make a spacer, or use bushings or nuts as spacers. Also, according to Paul, you can adjust the forward stop so that the shifter doesn't hit the dash, so bending may not be required - I'd do a test fit before heating the shifter and bending it - I've seen info that goes either way. Hope this works - I ordered mine last week, and will hopefully be installing this week....

HERE'S THE SCOOP> The Hurst Shifter #391-0155 will fit the 2001 NV-3500
BUT there is some things you need to know.
1. You will need 4 aluminum bushings .480 in diameter x .250 long with a .290
hole in them. ( These are to replace the bosses on the bottom of the stock
shift tower.)

2. You have to use the stock gasket NOT THE ONE THAT COMES WITH THE HURST.
Also, use the stock bolts NOT THE ONES THAT COME WITH THE HURST.
3. If you use the gasket that comes with the Hurst you will break the
mounting ears off the aluminum shift tower. The Spacers go in the holes in
the corners of the stock gasket to keep you from compressing the gasket too
much and breaking the tower. The bolts go thru the bushing and are pulled
down to 10 ft/lbs torque.
4. You cannot put the stock floor boot over the boot that comes with the
Hurst, Solution is to cut a 2" hole in top of the stock floor boot and put it
on first. Work it down over the tower then put the Hurst boot over it and use
the ties furnished with the shifter.
5. The chrome shift lever is going to hit the dash by about 1/8 inch.
SOLUTION> use a torch and bend it just above the bolt holes, this way the
console boot will cover the discolored chrome. Now you can replace the
console.

Yes it will fit a 2002. You have to fashion a .264 inch spacer identical to the gasket that comes with the kit ( I cut 4 replicas of the gasket out of sheet metal and fashioned two gaskets from blank Mr.Gasket material ) and use the stock bolts.

There is an adjustable stops on the shifter that you can adjust so it doesnt hit the dash. It's close ( 1/8th of an inch or so ) but it wont hit. The noise is a little louder. I think most of the noise is because I left the rubber sound dampner out. So it's noticable but it's not an annoying super loud sound. And you get used to it. You do however have to fill a .264 inch space between the shifter ball and the bottom of the mounting plate. I made 4 replicas of the gasket out of sheet metel and made two new gaskets out of blank Mr.Gasket material to fill the space. People have talked about making a 1/4 peice out of aluminum or using nuts that are a 1/4 inch tall. After fashioning the spacer the install took 15 minutes. Use the stock bolts too, they are longer.

Hey ScottE:

You are my hero! I will be ordering my new Hurst from Summit next week, thanks to the information that you provided. I have had access trouble with the Moparchat article that has been referred to on this site, I will keep trying there, but your directions are clear and well written.

Thank you for taking the time to relay this information.
