Subject: Shift Problem on 01 RT
IP: Logged

Message:
Everyone:

I have an issue on my 01 Dakota R/T. When I put my foot right to the floor (from stop position), the truck "sometimes" forgets to shift into second gear. It hits the rev limiter, and I have to let off the gas to get the truck to change into second gear.

This happens if im in 2nd gear, Drive, or with OD off. It does not seem to matter what auto trans position I am in.

I have a K&N filter with about 16000 miles on it, and a flow master mufler. I don't know if this could cause this problem. I have not yet cleaned my K&N filter. The truck has 18000 miles on it.

The dealer told my wife that they wanted to de-tune the throttle body.. or something like that. My wife is smart and knew I would not like that.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? Could it be a bad chip?

Thanks

I have the exact same problem...here is a list of things might cure it...

1.Adjust the TV cable a tad towards the front of the truck.

2.Put a shift kit in

3.Replace the transducer and overdrive selenoid.

4.I took my truck in ('01 R/T) and the dealer said they've been having recalls on the valvebody in the newer trucks because it acts like it fishes for gears when in drive.

Its not the throttle body.

I had the same problem with my 99 R/T. The changed the speed sensor on the side of the transmission housing which did nothing. Then they changed the 2 solenoids in the valve body which fixed the problem.

I have the same problem and I replaced the solenoids and transducer when I put in the shift kit (TransGo) and I still have the problem. But I love when it shifts now. hehehe

The only thing I haven’t changed in the trans is the pressure sensor or the speed sensor.

That’s my experience.

This is a known problem on the '01+ R/T's. Chrysler now has an updated Valve body for the trannies that fixes the problem. Not sure if there will be a TSB for it or not. The valve bodies in these trannies suck. The updated valve body replaces the plastic check balls with steel ones. Not sure of the exact part number, but it ends in the letter"D" All the part numbers are the same, but the letter at the end says which "update" it is.

So if I replace the valve body with the newer one and put a shift kit in, I am for sure gonna fix this problem? hehe

BTW... anyone know how much the valve body is or how hard it is to install?

Guys:

For people that have had this issue, and had it fixed. What should I tell them to replace?

The "Valve Body for the transmission" ?
I don't know a lot about cars/trucks, so i'm not sure exactly what this part is.

HSKR ---> What is a TSB ?

Thanks A LOT for your help !

The dealership is doing mine under warranty so for me its free...and since they're gonna have the valvebody out anyways they're gonna cut me a deal on a shiftkit install for only $60.

Ya I guess tell the dealer your problem and have heard the valve body for the tranny fixes it... perhaps ask around at the garage for someone who knows the trucks better.

Supposedly the parts are cheap to replace it and it's not that difficult, so perhaps I can convince a friend to do it for me for some beer hehe :)

I just read on Speedtweaks that it was the Governor Pressure Sensor (PN:56041403AA) that needs to be replaced (with the above PN).

So, is it this that needs to be replaced? Or is it the valve body in the tranny? Or both?? I am sure the sensor is pretty cheap, but any idea on how much the valve body costs?

Thanks!

Might I suggest a fluid change and filter.

My R/T had that problem, and I changed some parts and put in the shift kit. When I got it back on the road it still had the problem. But after driving it about 500Miles it no longer has that problem. The only thing I didn’t change was the pressure sensor or the speed sensor. Looking back at some early posts on this issue, someone else found crap on their speed sensor. You might want to try looking at that while you change the fluid, before you go and spend a butt-load of cash on parts that you don't need.

I hope this helps

I had the same shift problem on my 2000 RT. Took it to the dealer and the transmission guy tells me it the "torque converter" Goes on and on telling a big story about the computer. If the computer can't sense load it won't shift into second. Complete MORON. I told him this should not happen, and when i want to slam the pedal I want it to go go go. Anyways I blew my tranny 4 months later, all clutch plates in to third where mashed. I got all replaced under warranty, but had to wait 2 weeks to get my truck back. Not only that but I also blew my anti spin, got a new rear end. I have a file an inch thick on warranty work done on my truck, I swear the only thing that hasn't been replaced is the body.

Hey man, I wouldn't go replacing the tranny just yet, I heard the 4 speed trannies we have in our R/T's are supposed to be the best. It might be a small part on the tranny thats bad not the whole tranny itself. I'd get it checked out by a dealership or a small tranny shop that knows their sh!t. Might save you alot of money.

I had the same problem with my 01 R/T. Took it to the dealer and they lowered the pressure going to the tranny. Fixed that problem but now it seems to not want to down shift when I punch it. So I just manual shift when I want to go fast.

I have found that most all of the problems with the 46RE is electronic. The 46RE is bassed on the old 727 trans that has been proven for years.. I see so many guys getting them rebuilt when it was a good chance that it was a stupid sensor.

Check some of these links

CarolinaRT, You could try haveing it motorcacked or try running 2 bottles of Redline Injector cleaner through it at the next 2-3 fill ups. I would pick up 2 bottels of Redline Injector cleaner and put two in at fill up and see if it improves. You will not be out much.THeir is no way that they can tell buy looking at odometer that your injectors are bad!!! I do not know what you symptoms are but you can decarbon the EGR valve buy hand and clean the injectors either with strong detergents in the fuel or with a system like motorvack. just make sure that the garrage that does the motorvack is staffed with ASE certified tech.'s not lube tech.'s or parts changers!!! Their is a small potential for damage with motorvack system. You might want to by a service manual and a set of new injectors at Autozone and learn to do it your self if they are actualy bad. Replaceing injectors is an easy project.
