Subject: the 4.7 sucks!
IP: Logged

Message:
Seriously what's the deal with this engine why do none of the bolt-ons produce any gains? Sure it's pretty efficient from the factory but it's not that fast. What actually works (2001+)? Any of these, any dyno results?
exhaust (gibson-borla-flowmaster?)
headers (jba-borla?)
intake (K&Nfipk-volant-airaid)
computer (ase-jet?)

Start with a high flow cat and decent exhaust then start the boltons. Don't expect big torque like the push rod motors. You have to rev these engines.

buy a freakin supercharger, its a real bolt on
that produces plenty of power...good luck
hookin up those tires though.

if you want power out of any motor, you need
more than bolt ons (cams, head work, etc)

the only things that dont work on the 2001's
are the computer chips (jet, ASE, etc.) I beleive
kenne bell makes a flash for the 2001's now,
but everything else on your list would work
great. remember, its a combination of mods
that works the best . if you add an exhaust
and intake w/o any other mods, it wont make
that much diff, as soon as you go the forced
induction route, the "bolt ons" that were
added will become more effective.

basics for the 4.7...get air flowing in/out
(intaket/exhaust), make it run colder (180stat),
then go from there.

I installed a 180 T stat and a Flowmaster cat back. K&N drop in replacement, air box mod,5224 Autolites, and my 4.7 runs Tops, revs up and I am gone. It would perform way better if I had 3;91 gears other than the current 3;55 Sure grip is a nice item that i have also..and i run 87 Fuel Octane.

Ian, 5spd or auto? If you have the auto, then you need to step off, you messed up on the wrong truck, so accept your performance. My 5spd is fast as crap for a truck. Running similar to an R/T at the strip.

sure a 5-speed honda crx is fast too...big deal. What I'm referring to is the fact that on many of these posts people have been reporting losing power after installing aftermaket exhausts, headers, and intakes. I simply I'm trying to say that it's frustrating these bolt-ons which produce some extra power on other engines aren't on this one, I may have chosen the 5.9 if I knew that the aftermarket was having such a difficult time coming up with products that actually work

I agree, to some point. The 4.7 isnt as
responsive as i once thought. However, Like
most of us, I am judging by the seat of my
pants. I wish I could run a dyno, but thats
another story.
The 4.7 mods i have done increased my
mileage, so I can only assume, that i am
running more HP.
As for the supercharger point, I will be going
this route once the warranty come due, For 6
thousand bucks (canadian) and you bolt on
100 HP...im in! It should revive that
motor...unless something more interesting is
available down the road,,,
Quit complaining, there will always be
someone faster than you...just think of all
those chumps you CAN whip!

Its probably because you are adding mods that add high end horsepower and take away torque and are equating this to no performance gain. I went from a car with all top end and no torque, so I love this motor. So what if I lose 10ft-lbs and gain 20hp, its worth, and then there's still 290 ft-lbs of torque left. The HO cams are supposed to add tq and hp so I would do that. I have them on my living room floor and am waiting to dyno stock before I swap them in. Anxiously awaiting...

When I was researching what truck I was going to get, it became a draw between the 5.9 RT and 4.7. The breaking point for me was that the 2002 5.9 R/T did not have a manual tranmission available...I wasn't about to pay 25K+ for an automatic tranny on a performance vehicle (I consider my truck a performance vehicle, not a utility vehicle).

So I got the 2002 4.7 V8 5 speed EC Dakota, in Graphite :) I was a little uneasy about the graphite when I ordered it, I'd only seen one on the road and it looked good, but I was still thinking that I should have gone with jet black...but when I saw that sexy deep gray for the first time in the dealership parking lot, I knew I made the right choice.

The truck only has about 2500 miles on (I got it about a month ago). I'm waiting to save up some money for intake/exhaust mods and I also want to get a feel for it before I start doing mods. I think I'm probably going to do intake/exhaust, bed cover, and maybe some ignition mods for right now...then when the full warrenty expires, I'll go for the super charger, cam, and suspension mods. If I get good results from those mods and the truck is still running strong, I'll shave the door handles and antenna and do some aesthetic mods.

This is assuming my dream of a jet black 944 porsche turbo doesn't reroute my money :)

Anywho, I love my 4.7. It's fast, responsive and just overall a really well built truck. With the truck stock, I can bury a lot of the low-end mustangs and cameros. Not to mention that the ladies totally dig the truck :)
Life is good.

Its a biatch to keep shiny, Scratches from the wind I swear. I think even a car cover put scratches on her. My truck is pretty fast and I love burning rice, even at 100+ speeds with the A/C on! Been to the drags once and will keep it up. And yes, its true, the ladies do love my truck!

washing your car with towels is what puts swirl marks in it. I'm not sure there is a way to do it without getting them but all cars have them its just with dark colors they show more. There is a product you can buy, from what i've heard, that u can use to buff them out.

your doing something wrong if your car isn't getting faster with your mods.

as for the gst eclipse it will be a fast car. I had a 97 gst that put 248kp to the wheels with nothing more than a fishtank bleeder valve( cheep boost controller) intake, apexi exhaust ,pacesetter downpipe and no cat. the 4g63 motor is nearly bullit proof if your not gready. the tranny is kinda weak, but mainly the intereor will rattle and seem like the playschool car you had as a kid.

Yeah, you tell it QwikKota! The winds are horrible if that's the issue here. When I get my be lined, I am going to have the bottom portion under my doors and part of the flares done as well. Damn this paint!

Scratch X works alright, but I am very partial to 3M #39009 myself. You can remove light scratches and swirl marks with these two, but they ARE in fact removing clear coat when you do this.
Some waxes actually fill in the marks, this is another method of removing scratches and swirls. Fill them in so you don't see them anymore, but they just come out a week or two later...EXCEPT Zaino. I know, I know, I sound like a damn rep for them, but I really believe in the stuff as it works in every aspect as they claim.
So you are faced with a choice, do you remove some clear coat and start with a flatter layer, or do you go with a wax that's just hiding it, but it's still there and will come back eventually, no matter what wax you use. If you plan on selling the truck in a few years, I saw use the compounds, hehe, you don't care what it looks like in 10 years, it looks damn sexy right now!
Filling it in is more of a pain, but it makes a lot more sense and if you use a quality wax it should last a long time. Well past when you wax the next time, so you're slowly adding more and more and more.

I didn't know about Graphite, I ordered mine before Dodge's site changed and they were in the computers. :( That is a nice looking colour though. I have Patriot Blue though and I still love this one. No one else really has this in my town cept a quad, so it's all good.

I've owned a 2001 Dakota 4.7 Auto. and it was an awsome ride. I got great performance out of it once I put the custom intake, Jet chip, and flowmasters on it.

Since then I got an R/T, I like the torque from the 360 so much more over the 4.7 but it's a thirsty bastard.
Black is looks great on any vehicle but once you've owned it you won't again.

You would have to have a realy restrictive exhaust or intake system to hope to achieve anything with gimick junk. What are you peopel expecting from a filter and an exhaust???
If you want real performance you have to spend money or do a lot of real work your self.

1)Port, polish and reshape key areas of head.
2)Bore and Strok engine.
3) More Radical cam profiles(hoter then whimpy HO cam).
4)Raise compression ratio if staying normaly aspirated.
5)Use oxidizers like NO2.
6) Forced Induction.
7)Computer, Computer, Computer (Stand alone is best) but if someone is burning them and the stock unit can keep up it is convient.
8)Different intak manifold not some lame A$$ PCV duct work with a K&N at the end wraped in tin-foil!!
9)Intercooler
Bolt-on mania is the bane of auto industry. Most of the junk that is pedaled is what I call wallet lightner. Have you looked at the size of our exhaust from the factory??? It is pretty free flowing. The cats all three of them flow better then cats of just 5 years ago! The intake manifold is already smoother then any port and polish job could ever hope to achieve. OBDII and Dodge's lack of performance parts for our vechiles is what is holding things up. What we need is a factory authorized off road only PCM, Radical cams and a short runner intake. Their is a German company makeing a stroker kit, Huges and KRC make cam kits, you can get custom pistons, a couple of companys offer super charger kits and one will soon be offering a turbo kit. OEM's and Feds really do not want you messing with the vechiles and are actively makeing it harder for you to squeze performance out of them. If you really want performance then you have two choices. 1)Buy a Performance mind sports car or a Ford Lightning. 2) SPend big money modifying you truck. The best things in life are not quick or easy. If you want a plug and play treeat you get a plug and play reward. Personel after years of tuneing imports for unsanction and sanctioned races I will not put a wrench to a vechile to modify it if I am not going to at least double the output power. I am currently building a 396CI GenIII for a Camaro, hit is currently running a 200HP spray with a lunati bottom end and a really hot cam. I am swapping in a 4l80E trans in place of the 4l60E and I have a guy that is doing the flash for the PCM if I can not get my guy I will have Lenginfelter(SP) do the flash for me. The difference is that the customer is paying cash for better heads, bottom end, flash, my assebly and tuneing skill's etc.... He already knew when he came to me that a K&N with a different exhaust was not going to get it done! An engine is just an air pump if you are not getting more air and fuel in then you are wateing your time. It does not do anygood to get more air in if you can not get the extra fuel in too. All the free breathing intakes and exhausts will do nothing if the engine does not have a need for more air or can not enrichen the fuel or runs out of retard!!!! What did you guys expect from this engine???? Have you looked at GM's little 4.8??? THey only people that are getting alot of power out of this size engine is Porsche! While the Dodge boys could have reduced the vibrations a bit and made the engine a bit more refined it is the best engine dodge has ever built in my opion! It has alot of untaped potential. The only thing that might have been better would have been a refined modern 4.7liter version of the old slant six!!! I hapen to like the 4.7.

Yes the 4.7 sucks, that's why Dodge said forget ohc engins and went back to pushrod, they couldn't get the power out of them. The 4.7 comes reemed out to the max from the factory for the power it makes, heck they had to change cams and intake and other things for a meesly 30hp in the HO 4.7. The 5.9 has been de-tuned since 1996, thats why bolt ons really wake the 5.9 up way beyond the pissy little 4.7. That 4.7 is going out the door soon, real push rods are coming out of DC in the near future. If you want a real good 4.7 you will have to get the Toyota 4.7.
Later chumps!
