 Subject: tire size for 5.9 sport truck

Could someone help me with my tire size issue. I have a 2000 Dakota with the 5.9 engine/sport package and when I look up tires say at discount tire it says 255/55R17 but the truck inflation sticker on the door says 225/55R17 which is the size it has on there right now. I have the stock 17 inch rims which I believe are 9 inches wide and look too big for the tires currently on it. I inherited this truck from my brother who passed away and would like to put new tires on it and maybe fill up the wheel wells a bit more as well. Are there other sizes that fir this truck that won't have any clearance issues? thanks very much!
