Subject: Replacing upper ball joint
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2003 Dakota, 4WD. The driver side upper ball joint is bad (didn't pass inspection). The ball joints were replaced in 2005 with the recall (bolts now holding in the ball joint instead of rivets). Should I just replace the ball joint or do I order the control arm assembly with ball joint attached? Can I get away with just replacing the driver side or should I replace both sides at once? Any advise is appreciated.

You CAN replace only the bad ball joint without
adverse effects, If money isn't the main concern I
would replace the upper and the lower at the same
time and only use Moog or comparable parts.Your
truck front is independent suspended so you can
only do one side at a time.
The best and proper way is to do the uppers and
lowers on the whole truck at the same time then
have it aligned.
Most auto parts shops have the loaner tool you
will need.

Thank you. I know I can use either the ball joint remover tool or the pitchfork-type ball joint separator. I think the separator will damage the old joint but do I need a tool to install the new ball joint? My Haynes manual only shows the replacement of the control arm assembly as one unit. What torque do I use for the new bolts for the ball joint? Anything else I should keep in mind?

If I remember right, when I changed my upper ball
joints to the bolt-in, there was a sheet in the
package with the new bolts and the torque specs.

I used Moog.

Just replaced both uppers today. This set only lasted 10 years, Moogs!

55 foot pounds on the bolts that replace the rivets.
60 foot pounds on the ball joint stud.

Use a "pickle fork." It will damage the boot but you're replacing it anyways.
