Subject: 4.7 won't start after changing head

Help! My husband and I bought a 2000 Dodge Dakota SLT 4.7 4X4. Really nice looking truck, ran great but it had an oil leak. Appeared to be the drivers side valve cover gasket. Cleaned all the gunk off of it and then found it still leaking, changed the gasket, which was not changed already as we had been told and hoped and prayed that the bolt holding the exhaust manifold that looked like it was not screwed in all the way was not the issue. But it was, someone had screwed in a 9/16 bolt where the others were 10mm and it went into the oil cavity of the head. So my husband who could rebuild an old chevy with his eyes closed replaced the head. Now it won't start and seems as if it is not getting any spark. We have changed the crank sensor, the cam shaft sensor and used the 3X key thing to get codes and it shows up P done???? no numbers. Anyone got any ideas this is our first dodge and as of right now will be our last!! Thanks

Come on now, from your story, you can't blame Dodge for the
previous shoddy work done before you bought it.

Now, did you use a used head for the swap? If so what year
motor did it come from? Are you sure the cam sensor is
connected and working properly?

Yes you are right. Hopefully once we get it right we will have a good truck. From what I have read on this site we will have.

Yes it was a used head from a wrecking yard, I don't know what year, told the guy what we needed and he supplied the head. And we replaced the cam sensor. There is a mechanic that was supposed to come by for the last few weeks and has not made it yet, he suggested the crank and cam sensors, so my husband replaced both.

Thanks so much for answering, if you have any other ideas I would be love to hear them.

Well, I don't Remeber what years but they changed the
number of slots on the cam gear and that could be your
problem. I think one year used 16 teeth and the other used 24
or 32. I'm not real familiar with the 4.7 but I do remember
reading about that on here somewhere. Good luck with it. And
yes once it's running again you'll love it. I bought my ''00 QC
11 years ago, still have it and still love it with 170k on the
clock. Still runs strong and reliable.

He was able to use the cam from the original head, so if I understand you correctly that should not be the problem. We did get it to fire tonight. It appears now we may have a fuel problem. It started ran really rough and died. Then my husband checked the fuel pressure and it was really low so he bled the lines, got decent fuel pressure but it still won't start. But at least now it is firing and trying to start. Somewhere I read if it is giving trouble codes and those are not cleared it won't start until they are cleared and that has to be done at the dealer. We are calling Dodge again in the morning, the guys there have been very helpful and just having it towed in and see what is wrong. Thanks for your help, she is getting there!

Hey iv done a head change on a 4.7L and if you pull the head
do a oil pump change too theres something weird about the
4.7 that requires you to do that. And if you surface them
correctly they wont crank. Plus these are interferance engines
which means you have to spin the motor over 100 plus times
to get it in the correct time.

Hi there,
I replace the engine on my '07 4.7 dodge, after i
had it fit in i did the connections, and try to
crank it but nothing... i get all lights in
dashboard but that's all... not even the sound of
the fuel pump.
Any suggestions?
