Subject: temp. rising at idle?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, I have a 2000 Dakota club cab (4 door),4.7 liter, 8 cyl., Automatic, 4x4, with a 139,000 miles on it.

Wondering why my temperture gauge creeps higher when I'm sitting at idle? Today it nearly got up to 230 degrees! As soon as I go though, it drops back down to the normal level, around 190 degrees.

I should also mention that it takes forever to get the heat inside the truck to blow warm/hot air.

I'm thinking it has something to do with the thermostat?

Any help and/or advice would be very much appreciated? Thanks!

It could be low on coolant. Also, check the electric fan to
make sure it's coming on as it should.

Daddio, Thanks for the response and help!

I haven't checked the coolant level,I will have to check tomorrow. As far as the fan goes, I do know that it is working. It's pretty easy to hear when I'm at idle and the window is down.

Anybody else got any ideas?

Check the clutch on the Fan assembly, mine cost me a new motor before I figured out that it was not working, no air flow when you slow down to idle and it overheats. The enigne fan should roar when you first leave your driveway cold. We figured out the fan was not working when we stuck a screw driver in the fan while the motor was running and it stopped it from spinning with no effort, "wow" was the response. Replace the relay for the electric fan also, the fan has a low speed and a high speed setting, the high speed state was dead on my truck also.

That's a good idea to check the fan clutch also. I don't know
about 2 speed fans. My '00 doesn't have a 2 speed fan. I
forgot to mention that I've run my Dak without the clutch fan for
several years and it has never gotten over 210 even idling in
traffic here in the Deep South.

Man, do I feel like a dumbass. When I woke up this morning I checked the coolant level in the reservoir and it was dry. I don't know why I didn't know/check that, maybe because I've never ever had a problem with a radiator before. After I put some fluid in it, it seems to have solved the problem. Today, it ran cool and heated up inside much quicker. I am going to continue to add fluid the next couple of mornings to top it off good. I can't believe I was that stupid. Thanks for helping me out!

Bob, I know the engine roar you are talking about. It comes and goes though and I always thought it was something like a vacuum leak, but a stange random one on my Dodge. I really appreciate your advice and I am going to check into it asap. I love my Dodge truck but it's also starting to burn through some oil and get rusty.

Thanks again for the help!
Keep on truckin!
