Transmission quit while going down the freeway. Doing 70mph then suddenly feels like I'm in nuetral. Thought the torque converter had gone out, AGAIN. When I disconnected the cooling line and started the truck there was no pressure pumping the trans fluid. Is changing a trans. oil pump difficult, and can it be done without removing the tran. from the truck?
Vitals: 1994 Dodge 4x4 5.2L I believe this is the 518 model transmission. The fluid finally did come out by forcing air into the cooling line and after a few seconds it was flowing. Everytime it stopped flowing I hit it with the air and it would start again. Dropped the pan and was surprised there were no metal shavings in it and the fluid didn't smell burnt and still looked red. Any Ideas about fixing this? Don't want to take it to an expensive shop if I can do the job myself.

Normally yes, unless you have all the right special tools and the requisite knowledge.
2. Can it be done without removing the tran. from the truck?
No. It's inside at the torque converter end.

Thank you, New Question's, Where does the oil pump get pressure from? If the torque converter goes out will the oil pump still pump oil throughout the transmission?

One of the functions of the output shaft of the torque converter is to turn the transmission oil pump.

there are inner splines and outer splines on the output shaft and the torque converter, which one is responsable for the oil pump. The deeper splines of the converter being the inner and the shallow splines or the fatter ones being the outer ones in this instance.
