If you own a 2002 Dak and plan on purchasing a Split Rear Gibson Exhaust beware! It appears that a new stabilizer bar located behind the rear axle is a new Feature to the 2002 and was not anticipated by Gibson. Split rears WILL require the removal of the spare tire for a proper fit. Some possiblity of putting the tire back after installation may be possible in some instances. Also, there have been numerous complaints about the bends in the pipes, that they are not fitted properly to the rear end. After a 6 hour installation and some custom bending, I managed to fit mine, and still lost my spare. Buyer Beware this is NO 30 minute job! On the lighter side, the pipes sound wonderful and it seems peppier, but thats probably because it cost me 400 bucks to buy the damn thing.

My application was for a 2WD. There was NO notation informing me of a spare removal. Gibson Rep. (which I talked to today) says that depending on your pipes bend, it may be necessary regardless. I asked if in the future to be informed about such things before purchasing and he says its dealt with on a Case by Case basis.

Or you could just find a shop and put your own true duals on like I did :)

I have a 2001 slt cc 4x4.
I put the gibson dual exhaust kit on my truck, knowing about the removal of the spare tire. If I put a lower profile tire onto my rim, will I still be able to use it as a spare? I have the upgraded 16" wheels and tires, cuz I want to mount my spare back to the original location between the pipes if possible, or should I just get a 15" rim with a smaller tire?

If you have the 16 inch wheels then I have a perfect solution for you! Those wheels are 255/16's which will not fit with the pipes installed. You need about 1 1/2 inches of clearance around the pipe to ensure it won't damage the spare or Knock against it while driving. My suggestion would be to get 215 or 225/16's which fit your factory spare steel rim, but are about 3 inches smaller but just as wide. This will allow you plenty of room. Get someone to help you raise your spare while you position it under the car. It make take a few times to move around, but eventually you will get it just right. Worked for me without a problem. Make sure when purchasing the new spare to use the old one as a guide.

The tires on my truck are 265/70/16, and I have the aluminum spare(not steel).Could I still Drop to the 215 or 225 ? I realize I wouldnt be able to use it in rotation, but at least I may have a spare that wouldn't get stolen out of my bed.

On a practical note!! You will make more power with the gibson single 3" then you will with duals. You will lose low end torgue with the dual setup.

Dont use a smaller spare on a truck with limited slip. Or you will be at the dealer.

I have to kind of concur with sandman. I've heard a lot from both the Durango & Dakota people about losing low-end torque with both custom built & homemade cat-back systems, but it seems that the majority of those complaints are from people with dual exhaust systems.

When I had my stainless Gibson swept-side grafted in, I noticed an immediate difference throughout the entire RPM spectrum. Off-the-line performance/response was definitely better...I gained the ability to chirp them from the line. And, the cruising to WOT performance/response was better.

Just my observation...cannot speak with any authority on the dual systems, as I haven't tried them.

Hey Mar, I don't have limited slip on my truck. If I spin my tires, only the right side spins. Am I still safe if I get a smaller spare?
