No system is perfect - while there can be abuses in a union system, there are often many more in non union shops. One thing I urge you to think about is that a union shop is a sign of poor management. Workers have no reason to organise if management treats them fairly in the first place. Those who cry "boo hoo", jobs moved to South America because of union workers should know management that would do that won't be happy unless you're willing to work in sweatshop conditions for them anyway. I notice many of you aren't using your usual screen names in this discussion. No shame here, some of you also know me as Kowalski.

What made america america was the thought that people could speak their minds freely and not have to worry about persecution. Those who speak of others being "unpatriotic", because they denounce some policy from the idiots in the oval office, or drive an import car, are nothing more than communists trying to control the thoughts and minds of thos who disagree with them.
On the note of the unions, they started off as a good idea, but like most other systems of organization, some becames twisted and corrupt. I hear all the time of people who are in unions of people getting paid 35.00 bucks an hour to go to their job site, hide, and sleep for 12 or 14 hours and not do a damn thing. At my school we used to get paid internships at local powerplants to work and learn. That was a good system our school had setup for us and had been ongoing for about 10 years. Last year, the unions stepped in and took over the workforce, and as a result, we lost our interships because of some b/s policy.
These are all issues that need to be resolved in this country before all of the work force gets move to a foreign country. The unions need to learn a good system of checks and balances. If the CEO's and sharholders learn how to properly manage their companies, there would be no need for unions, but as a result of the people that are voted into office, and the people that get control over companies america is going to be screwed for a long time.

America is a shlthole. What made America what it is today is greed, corruption and the never ending quest for whitey to control the worlds oil.

In other words, we slaves built America while some fat cat white cracker sat on his ass and drank lemonade.

That's what America is.

You've got that right; work ethic is in the toilet and the slackers hardly ever even thank you for your money when you thank them for your purchase at the checkout.

The work ethic is in the toilet because no one wants to work for their money anymore. I see these commercials on T.V. all the time with people saying "I'm glad I got out of that trade i was learning and got into computers!", and its true. Alot of people would rather sit in an office where they don't have to think about what they do and want to keep it that way. They want no challenges in life, but ALWAYS want more money. And i still believe we are living in the past, but no one wants to believe it. Last time i checked, the richest 10% still own 90% of the wealth, our steel industry will be lucky if its still here in 10 years, higher taxes for those of us who don't have a 6 figure income, and alot of my friends in the military have to use food stamps and what not because of pay cuts! For gods sake, these people protect us and yet they can't afford to feed their families! my .02 tho

Unions are why you are here on the computer at night, day or weekends-"They brought us the weekends and holidays off!! enough said!!
money and politics run the world! (sadly)
They do not discriminate age, creed etc.
To each his own belief (everyone has theirs)
Union or not- pride in ones work = succeess
Teamwork is something i see americans easily forget. we have become such a me, me, me society.

I would also like to buy a new dakota made in the USA, knowing it wasn't put together by 6 dollar an hour worker who has no pride in his/her work. we cannot!! sad but true!!

Speaking of Unions,

At my last job back in Indiana. I had the opertunity to go into facilities both Union and Non-Union.

At a tire manufacturer, we were in a particular area, taking measurements, and had a supervisor leading us around talking to some of the workers. I couldn't believe what i saw. As, we were talking to this worker, he was sitting on his @ss and reading a newspaper and coffee. 3 hrs. later, he was in the same spot, doing the same thing. Is this what Unions protect?

An large Axle co. in Indiana. had 3-4 workers, on the roof top making hot dogs and selling them from like 10am-1pm. They got caught, but unions spared there jobs. Is this what Unions protect?

Unions had there place in large companies, but i just feel that they are just driving all the jobs out of this great nation. They demand too much from companies that aren't doing very good financially.

I personally think, Unions are going to be the death of our Labor Industry.

Just my 2 cents.

I couldn't agree less - without unions big business would be the death of us all. The only jobs I've had with vacation time or health insurance were the union jobs. That lazy worker you mentioned ? we have a guy like that where I work, he's the bosses buddy. It's only because of me and some other guys raising the issue because we're sick of doing his share of the work that something is finally starting to be done about it. You see our union contract has this funky little clause about fairness in it, and we're pointing out that it's not fair for him to goof off while we do all the work. Any system can be abused, but its unions that brought people things like weekends, health insurance, and fair working conditions. Just because some lowlifes might try to take advantage is no reason to condemn unions, you have to look at the big picture. Union steward and proud of it.

i agree with Kowalski.. retirement plans.. vacation time.. over time.. its all good.. although one thing to say about unions is that the people at the top are only there cause of connections and friends in high places are very good.. enemies in high places are a very bad thing..
