About 5 months ago I was getting about 15 mpg or a little better shortly after i started loseing power slowly and before i knew it my gas mileage had dropped to 12 mpg and about a month ago my power dropped in a hurry to the point i cant even bark the tires without power braking. It seems like takeoffs are a struggle and we wont even talk about towing. Before i knew better i often let my fuel go down till my gas light turned on. Do you think all this could be caused by my fuel pump.

The fuel warning light on my 97 goes on with 5 gallons in the tank. So unless you stretched it a lot, and often, I doubt that.

But, first thing I think i would do is see what codes have been pending in the PCM )engine computer). Even if the check engine light does not go on, there are often engine conditions the computer has noticed and can report on. If codes are revealed, follow them up and perhaps a solution will appear.

without this, though, the old school approach: how many miles on the car since your last known tune up? has the car been running rough? Missing? other stuff? All of this behavior is potentially diagnostic. It does sound like a gradual degradation which speaks a little of "tune up"

It may be something as simple as new plugs and wires and such. I don't know what kind of ignition the 4.7 has, coil-on, coil packs, conventional, ??--so I really can't make suggestions beyond this.

Hope this helps.

Low fuel pressure can cause a drop in power and economy. So can an O2 sensor that is going bad but not bad enough to set the MIL.

Mac has some good advice. Check for codes, Tune-up, tire pressure and alignment, check fuel pressure.
