Subject: How much play in driveline?
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok, so I got the engine running smoothly in my '95 Dakota, and now I get to tackle the problem of a really nasty vibration above 50mph or so. First thing I did was get under the truck and grab the driveline and give it a twist, to see if it was time for u-joints. There seems to be lots of play in both driveshafts, and not at the u-joints. The transfer case makes a gearing sort of sound when doing this. This is while the truck is not running and in gear (it's a manual).

Also, the t-case was almost bone dry... Since I just got the truck (cheap at least!), I don't know how long it's been that way. I topped it off with fluid but the vibration is still there.

Would I be right in assuming the transfer case is toast? Or is it normal to have some play in the drivelines like that?

Thanks,
Alex

A little rotational travel is okay. Try and move the driveshaft up and down at the T-case and they differential to see if any bearings have worn. Obviously the T-case being dry is not a good thing.
