Subject: Trouble starting...Sometimes

For the last few months my truck takes 3-4 seconds to start. I only have to turn the key over once, there's no repeating, but it doesn't fire up right away. I've had it checked out by a mechanic and all he found was an emissions leak, but assured me it wouldn't cause the problem. I should also state that when the truck's been running it normally fires right up. Another thing I've noticed is that when the temperature is below 65 or so, my truck usually starts without hesitation, whether the engine is hot or cold. Sounds confusing, but that's the deal. Anyone have any advice or idea as to what could be the problem?

Start by checking fuel pressure.

He put a fuel pressure gauge and said it was normal.

Did he just check fuel pressure while the engine was running? Or did he leave the gauge on after shutting the engine down?

Try this. Try cycling the key on and off a couple of times before you try to start it. If it fires right up after that then it sounds like the fuel system is not holding pressure like it should. Could be the injectors leaking a little. Could be the fuel pump check valve. If it's the fuel pump check there are 2 things you can do for that. One - Change out the fuel pump assy because the check valve is leaking and you can't change just the check valve.
Two - Live with it and just remember to cycle the key on and off a couple of times before that first morning start.

If it's the injectors leaking replace them. I think you have have other issues if the injectors were leaking though.

That doesn't say much, You need to know how many lbs. of pressure it had. This person might have no idea what is normal pressure for the truck.

He did tell me to cycle through a few times before I start it, so the fuel pressure builds, and it normally does. To be honest, not sure if the truck was running or not when he checked it. He's a guy I know, so just took him at his word. Prob should have asked. I had the injectors changed months ago do to a leak, yet the problem still persists, that's why I'm slightly perplexed.
I don't mind the truck taking a few seconds to start, but I plan on selling it soon. After 8 years I've decided to part ways with it, but I want to make sure someone is getting a reliable truck before I pull the trigger.

From what you posted above it must be the check valve in the fuel pump. If that's the case go back to the two options I posted earlier.

Just had my truck in the shop for two days with no progress made. Everything that could be causing the problem is working normally. No one seems to have any answers for me. If I take it to another mechanic he's going to charge me $80/hr to do the exact same thing the previous mechanic did. Frustrating indeed.

I came to the boards for this exact same thing. I figured it was fuel pressure. I had been cycling the key a few times to build the pressure and it would be ok. I just checked Auto Zone`s website and their pump is $233 and some change so ... I think I`ll just cycle the key a few more times just yet lol

Hey, I have a 97 Dakota 4x4 SLT with a 5.2L.

Same deal for me here, if I cycle the key about 4-5 times, the truck seems to fire up. If i forget and try to start the truck, then I'm into trouble. I've got to cycle it, pump it and pray it starts. Once it's started, I can usually start no problems all day until the next morning.

Sounds like fuel pressure to me, but how would I know if it's injecters. I bought the truck new, never donw anything with the injecters. About 5 yrs ago I replaced the pump, but the truck was acting different then. Then it just would not prime, or it would prime intermittently. Not the same as now, I can hear it prime each time i cycle the key.

Any thoughts?
