Subject: 4x4 problem

Message:
I have a 94 Dodge Dakota 5.2L V8. I have a shift on the fly 4x4 system and for some reason when I'm driving and switch to 4 wheel it wont disengage when I'm moving like it should, I usually have to stop, switch to 2 wheel then back up to disengage the gears and continue driving. I changed the transfer case fluid and to no avail it still won't disengage when I'm driving around like it should since it's a shift on the fly. And it won't switch to 4 low, whenever I'm in neutral and try to get it into 4 low I hear a grinding of gears. Anyone know why?

To switch into 4 lo you should be at a complete stop with the transmission in neutral before shifting. As for sticking in 4 hi I am not sure what that problem could be. I had a 93 and it would stay in 4 hi for a little while after shifting out and sometimes have to go in reverse as well. I am not adept in the inter workings of the np231 so I cannot diagnose that problem.

To give advice, you should not just repeat the poster's info. He already said the grinding trying to go into 4 low was while in neutral. So telling him to do it in neutral doesn't help!

To shift to 4 low you need to be in neutral with your truck rolling less than 5 mph. I will go in that way.

any front drive sheft will work for a dakota.. but make sure you get the right size.. it will either be 19 inches well to well or 26 inches

Well, you know what caliber of people they hire at most of these places. I was told by a friend that is a manager at A/Z that the software they use for parts lookup and sales is geared for anyone with at least a 5th grade education to be able to use it.

I have to chuckle at Marty's last comment. Every single time I go into my local Advance Auto and ask for parts for the front driveshaft, front differential, etc, I ALWAYS get asked (all guys, btw), "Is that a two- or four-wheel drive?"!!! And here I thought that you couldn't be brain dead and still live...

As a side note- Whenever you have to go in for universal joints, take the old one in so that you can be POSITIVE that you get the right one from the parts store. If you don't do this, I would bet money that you will be going back again to get the right one, anyway.
