Subject: They've Killed all the 318's

Message:
Went to pick n pull to look for a replacement 5.2L motor and they had so many vehicles with complete motors it was unbeleivable. I thought I had scored when I found one waaaay in the back with only 69,000 miles on it. So I went and got my tools and commenced to wrenchin and cuttin stuff I didn't need. Finally I hook the hoist and jerk it out. This engine was too clean to be in a junk yard. I could not beleive my luck. It took me about 40 minutes to manuever that hoist with the motor and my toolboxes up to the front where I could pay for this hidden gem. Then this lady asks me if this is out of one of the C.A.R.S. vehicles and when she recognizes that I have no idea what she is talking about she asks me " Does the motor turn over?" Of course not, it doesn't have a battery or a starter, or any fluid either!! she sez " No I mean can you spin the flywheel and make the motor turn over?" NO, Because it doesn't have a flywheel, I left it with the Torque converter. Thats when I remember that I had a hell of a time removing the torque converter because I couldn't get the thing to spin. So I sez hold on just a minute, let me check something out before I hand over my cash and I bust out a breaker bar and 1 1/4 socket and hook it to the crankshaft pully and sure enough it will not turn at all. What a waste of time and effort removing a motor ruined by some ass hole dumping sodium silicate into the crankcase. This motor only had 69,000 miles and its been ruined. Oh well at least it doesn't have to be pulled out now. I would later find out that the C.A.R.S. vehicles which she referred to is how they identify the vehicles which had been part of this cash for clunkers program. This particular pick n pull had hundreds of these vehicles and they were marked with the letters CARS somewhere on each one. some even had a tag attached to the motor. What a waste of perfectly good parts since there is no way to undue the damage done to these motors.

They didn't kill all the 318's, just the ones people turned in under the C.A.R.S. program. There were many more Ford and Chevy v8's turned in than mopars. Good 318's are still available in many boneyards.

So much for following the rules. That truck or car if used under the cash for clunkers was to be crushed and not used for any parts at all.

No, all they had to do is seize the engine. The rest could be used for salvage parts.

Sad part is, that "clunker" cost us, the taxpayers, $24,000 per vehicle, according to the GAO.

"Fotodak" and "Bro" are posting false information. For one thing, I am not a Democrat (nor a Republican either for that matter). And the GAO did NOT say that the cost was $24,000 per vehicle. That is an outright lie. I've seen a bogus claim attributed to Edmunds that came up with that number. A very questionable claim; and certainly not made by the Government Accounting Office.

As for proving my "numbers" - I didn't give any hard numbers before that was posted; but made the claim that more Ford and Chevy v8's were destroyed than mopars. This is based on the fact that Ford and Chevy trucks were the most turned in vehicles - and that is where you will find most of the v8's.

Do the research.
Salvage yards have 180 days to remove any parts they may need and THEN the vehicle must be crushed.
And drivetrain parts MAY be sold if they are sold separately.

As for the $24k figure, reearch showed of the 690,000 cars sold under the program, only 125,000 were bought by people who had no plans on buying a new car.

IOW, most people were going to buy new cars anyway.
The idea behind the program was to generate sales. It generated sales of 125k units.
Do the math. 3 billion divided by 125k equals what?

While the methodology used to come up with the figure of 125k vehicles sold attributable to the program may be questionable (and certainly didn't come from the GAO), I agree the program was a clunker for other reasons.

I misspoke.
The info was not the GAO, but it wasn't a bogus edmunds.com research.

It was a piece done in fact, by Edmunds.

More 360's are available from the Rams, which is where I found 2 motors for my 318 Dakota and v6 Dakota. I wouldn't bother with a 318 again. I thought cash for clunkers was great with all those V8 Dakotas and Durangos in the junk yard I have plenty of spare parts now.

Not just V8's. But you can more 239 cid V6's from Chrysler than V8 engine's in a boneyard. Shows you just how much more reliable there 318,360 cid V8's were back then.
