Alright, so I just bought a 2000 Dodge Dakota quad cab 4X4 with the 4.7L V8. I was just wondering what is the very first thing that I should do or check on this truck? My very first priority is to increase the gas mileage and performance. Later on I would like to lift it but that's a ways away. On my trip up to Spokane with the truck I had the cruise control set at about 75 mph the entire time and averaged 14 mpg. That seemed really low to me but I was not sure. What can I do to increase the gas mileage and make the truck run better? Thanks.

I'd start by checking plugs and air filter. But your 4x4 QC is a heavy truck, with parasitic loss in the front drivetrain. Milage souns about right for a 4.7 QC at 75; might do better slowing down a bit if the milage is of primary importance.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

good idea to check plugs and air filter, plugs/every 30,000..air filter/every 15,000. I switched over to running full synthetic since proof shows a slight increase in mpgs. Also, some claims of simple add-ons to the air intake increases in mpgs. Chack the tires too, obviolusly new tires with the right psi get the best mpgs. There are all sorts of claims of other things you can do. Just remember all them little things may add up to an alright savings in mpg's.
