Subject: 5.2L Thats fine after warm up...
IP: Logged

Message:
Just bought a 99 Dakota, 4x4, 5.2L. First some history: Truck has 180k, motor has 80k, just replaced all intake gaskets, plugs, map sensor, and the previous owner used a superchips 3715 MAX Micro Tuner to up the horsepower and i cant get it to go back to the origonal settings. Now for whats wrong: When i start the engine it bogs itself down to about 4k rpms and sputters, then it revs itself up and levels out. It does this about 2 sometimes 3 times until its warmed up. If i drive it without letting it warm up when it bogs down horrificuly when i give it gas. I thought it might need a head gasket, but only once have i had it blow blueish when starting, with no smell of burning antifreeze. Thats all i can think of for now, will post future problems. Btw no codes because previous owner wiped them out.

No codes have come up at all for this problem. He wiped out a code that had something to do with the gas tank.

Hi Bill
What I ment was, If the problems were not fixed. Clearing the codes will do no good,
They will re appear. Which in your case might be a good thing. A code for the gas tank would be a first I've heard.

He said th code was from a leak in the small hose that goes to the filler neck, which i fixed when i got the truck. Could it be a bad sensor even without the check engine light coming on?

I would check out your idle air controller to make sure it is working properly. I had a similar problem on my 93 until I replaced it. It is held on with two torques head screws to the back of your throttle body. Easy to remove and not that expensive to replace, but a good place to start.

Does it do this only on the first startup in the morning?

It does it whenever the truck sits long enough for the engine to cool down, which is about a half hour.

^I second that. Get a gage , hook it up and check @ idle and WOT, also after shutting off.

Maybe also again after it's been shut down for half hour or so you say it takes for symptoms to reappear. One possibility is leaking fuel injecter could be losing fuel pressure; and dumping the fuel into that cylinder.

How would i check to so which injector or if it even is the injector? If I dont let it warm up and just drive it it wno go over 1000 rpms and if i give it gas it feels like its not firing at all.

Did you get a gauge and hook it up ?
If so, what readings are you getting ?
We understand it's not running well until warmed up; no need to keep reiterating that.

And what is the pressure after it has been shut down for half an hour or so ? With key off. That is the pressure reading that could point to a leaking injector.
