My 2002 Dakota sport tow package 4.7 is throwing up a p0303 code. I can feel it missing. From what I have read it would meen a 03 cylinder misfire. I am going to start with the plugs. What are the best plugs to use? Champion or NGK? also are there upgraded wires I can use and if so who can recomend. Also I was dealing with an over heating problem and will be changing the T-stat and coolent flush. Can anyone recomend a coolant? and temp of t-stat? My cap was messed up and I replaced it and bleed the air ouot and that seemed to solve the issue but it is still running warm only when I am towing my boat. and it seems to not want to draw the coolent back in the motor as it should.

Did you do a leakdown test as was suggested by "kid" on the overheating thread ? Also, what do you mean by running warm ? How hot ? Tstat should be 195. This is when the Tstat fully opens, so it can be normal to see around 210 on the gauge when towing.
The 4.7 is coil on plug design, the factory wires to the coil don't generally need replacing. Read the plugs as you pull them; especially the 3rd one back on the driver side. If it looks rich or fouled, could be a leaking injector at that cylinder. That could trip that code.

I dont have actual temp gauges on my PU it has Idiot gauges. It has been running about in the midle of the gauge when in the past it ran at about 1/4. I looked at takeing out the plugs last night and they look like a real pain in the Arse to remove. Do you have to take the heater house out of the way to get #3 out?

Are you kidding me? I took a look under the hood again and you have to take the eniter fresh air intake off to get to the #2 = 3 plugs?

Just a few 10mm fasteners to do that, if memory serves me right. Not such a big deal. Were you running a 195 Tstat when the gauge reading was at a quarter ? Mine runs closer to midway, though it's an '00 with numbers on the gauge. You haven't mentioned if you did the leakdown test. I'm guessing no, if you think it's a big deal to pull an air intake. Probably a good idea to check your air filter while you're at it.

No I have not done the leakdown test. I am planing on changing the plugs and t-stat tomorrow along with flushing the coolant system. for starters. And hope that fixes the miss. The collant system seems to be doing fine after replaceing the rad cap and bleeding the air off. it just runs a bit warm when towing. It all started a few weeks ago when it go hot. I noticed the rez tank was near empty and the Rad cap seemed to be blowing alot of steam into the rez. So I let it cool off and replaced the cap and added coolant, then bled the air off after a couple of short trips. That seemed to cure the heat prob but it seems like it is still running a bit warm, but only when I have been towing. But it also was in the 90s when I towed last weekend. I am going to start with the t-stat and flush. Does that not sound logical?
