Jack, according to the FSM for an '01, it looks pretty straight forward. Remove the tie-rods from the steering knuckles, Remove the power steering lines, Disconnect the steering coupler then Remove the 2 bolts holding the rack on. Need anything else?

Got it done now thanks anyway. On this silly Shelby the crossmember the motor mounts on is right in front of the R/P. I had to raise the motor up about a inch then pull it out the drivers side.I think they put this in when they put the V8 in it. I dont know, do the 89 v6 have a crossmember in front of the r/p?? Guess I need to check it out at the old salvage yard. Mines welded in looks aftermarket.

Don't know for sure. Have you bought a new rack already? The reason I ask is that I looked up one for your truck on rockauto.com and they had a new unit on closeout special for about 40 bucks! Only one left.
