2000 Dodge Dakota V8 4x4 started surging on highway, then no acceleration and engine light read a P0121 code. Took it in to dealer and they replaced the map sensor. Now the truck idles rough and surges on a cold start. Doesn't the P0121 mean TPS sensor? Should that be replaced now or could the rough idle be from a vacuum hose leak after the sensor was installeed? I also heard that perhaps the idle needs to be relearned now and that could take driving up to 100 miles to correct itself??

Wonder why they would replace a MAP sensor for a TPS code... Yes, replace the TPS. Do it yourself, it's two torx head screws and an electrical connector. You will probably have to remove some or all of the hoses from the air cleaner. It's still a very easy job, much less involved than changing the oil. Call your local auto parts stores for prices on the TPS. Reset the PCM when done. If you don't have a code reader, just pull the battery (-) cable and leave it off for half an hour or so.

There's a quicker way. After you pull the battery cable, push down on the brake pedal and turn the ignition switch to START for about 5 seconds.
Codes cleared!

I found that my 2000 dakota 4.7 was not idleing like it should it would go from 700 rpms to 1500 rpms even at highway speeds it would jump in rmps similarly, it turns out it was as simple as removing the Idle air controller which is located just below the Throttle Position sensor, and cleaning it with carberator cleaner. It was covered with what looks to be black soot. I clean it thoroughly along with the throttle body and It runs like a champ.

I just bought a 2008 dodge dakota 4x4 sxt. it idles a little rough and surges at times. I have taken it to the dealer I bought it from twice and they said the first time that it had the wrong spark splugs in it and they replaced them. It did ok for about a half a day and went back to doing it. took it back again and they could not find anything wrong. i put seafoam in it and it still does it. what can i do if anything to stop the shaking and surging. thx for any help u can give me. it has a 3.7L engine.

Are there any codes showing up? If it is intermittent you'll
probably need to hook up some kind of data logger that can
record some sensor readings while the truck is acting up.
