i just purchased a superchip for $225 on ebay and it is by far the best thing i have done to this truck. i must have had the death flash because it hauls a$$ now and gets alot better mpg so far. i have it on 87 performance right now and am just curious if its enough of a noticeable difference to switch it over to the 91 performance setting since gas is pretty expensive right now?

What switching to high octane gas will do is allow the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to advance ignition timing a little bit, since one of the tasks of the PCM is to keep your ignition timing advanced to just short of pinging, for best efficiency.
The small gain in power you might see by a few degrees of ignition advance may not pay you back for the higher cost of fuel.

HOWEVER-
If the superchip has a setting that requires premium fuel, then of course you should use premium fuel if you intend to use that setting.
Keep in mind that your Dakota fuel delivery system is "returnless". The fuel pressure regulator is on top of the fuel pump assembly. So to get premium fuel to the injectors, you have to use up all the fuel in the lines from the output of the pressure regulator to the fuel rail. That means driving around a bit after you put in premium fuel before you use any "premium fuel required" settings on the superchip device.

In a non-HO 4.7, the task of the PCM is to provide a predetermined level of ignition advance based on information from things like the throttle position sensor and the intake air temperature sensor. For a PCM to keep your ignition advanced to just short of pinging when running higher octane fuel would require knock sensors - something the regular 4.7 doesn't have. You'll have to listen for the pinging yourself. As when pinging starts relates to engine load, those with lower gearing can get away with running more advance.

thanks for the responses. yeah i've heard about the pinging and from what i understand it only happens when under full or close to full throttle. since the superchip has the 87 and 91 octane setting i'm thinking about running a tank of 89 octane on the performance setting to see if i can possibly get it to not ping without having to spend more on gas..

Chuck - I thought the info you posted was helpful; especially the part about the lower octane fuel remaining in the lines. Just thought one small point could use a bit of clarification.

stevedak - The pinging has to do with the load on the engine more than the throttle position ( although a more open throttle can put more load on the engine). Say you were pulling a heavy load uphill on a hot day with highway gears but under light throttle. It could still ping. For a real world example, I have more ignition advance through a PCM flash. I had to use premium when towing heavy, otherwise it was fine on regular - even under heavy throttle. Going from 3.55 to 4.10 gearing, I no longer need to run premium - the engine works better because it has less load.

since i brought up the topic of superchips i figured i'd ask yall one more question about it.. after having it in my truck for about a week or so i noticed that it runs a little colder but it seems like it overheats extremely easy. i know its hot outside but overheating has never really been an issue so iwas curious if anyone else has noticed this as well?
