Subject: transmission rebuild or no?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey everybody,
Recently the transmission on my 93 5.2L 4x4 started slipping on shifts, shooting the rpms way up before it would finally clunk into gear. I assumed right away it was the transmission and took it into a shop (transmission specialist) who offered to rebuild the whole transmission.

Is it possible that the problem is something minor and they are trying to take advantage? I don't have any codes to give you but I could describe the problems if you need more details.

Thanks

you would never get codes for that particular truck, when it comes to the tranny.

I have the same truck, and had the same issue with it a few years back. Try adjusting the TV cable(no joke). What you need to do is go get a hayes manual and look up how to do it. probably a good idea to do a tranny fluid/filter job and adjust the bands(while the pan is off) too. Get the book. It will tell you how to do those things. It saved me alot of money... ALOT.

Check to see if it is low on transmission fluid. That can cause it to slip. If that is the case, get a bottle of fluid from the parts store to condition the front and rear seals. That usually stops the leaking.
If it is not low on fluid, pull the pan and check the fluid for clutch material. If you find a lot of clutch material, it is time for a rebuild. If not, you might get luck and adjust the bands, replace the transmission fluid and filter, and be good to go.

Transmissions as well as O2 sensors are good for 500,000 miles with no problems. With that said, this would mean you do not know what you are doing.

Thats obviously a stupid statement. so ignore it. check your fluid, then follow my last post before you drop the pan.
