I replaced my 1998 Dodge Dakota 5.2 with a 5.9 crate motor from Dodge. It ran fine for about 2000 miles and all of a sudden it pulled code 1763 or Governor sensor voltage too high. It is supposed to be from 2 volts to around 4.5-5 volts max but it is getting spikes to 7.0 volts on the return side. This causes the MIL light to come on and the transmission stays in third gear. I have to turn the ignition off and restart the motor to get the transmission to shift again. It will go for several miles and then it trips the code and the transmission locks in third again. I can manually put the auto transmission in first and the transmission will actually go as low as second gear but never to first.

The dealer replaced the govenor sensor and the transducer. That did not fix the problem. I took it to Aamco trans and they replaced the wiring in the transmission thinking it might be a short or open ground. That did not fix the problem. They wanted to rebuild the transmission with only 15K miles since the last rebuild. No way!

I took it to Tustin Transmission next because I heard they were really good at diagnostic problems. They replaced the wiring from the transmission to the ECM and checked all the ECM plug wires to make sure the contacts were good. It still did not fix the problem. Then they replaced the wires from the trans to the ECM to no avail. While it was at this shop, they thought it was the ECM. I have two other ECM's that we substituted and this still did not fix the problem.

They gave it back in frustration and said maybe it was the alternator spiking. I replaced the alternator and that didn't work either.

I was told off a forum that it might be the O2 sensors which share the ground with the transducer for the generator sensor. I disconnected each of the O2 senosrs and it still threw code 1763. It was odd but with the O2's unplugged no codes for the O2 sensors were noted, but the truck ran very rich.

Most people think it is an open ground somewhere, but they can't say where to look. Almost every wire has been replaced or checked.

Has anyone got any ideas?

If all the electricals check out, there's only one other way to go - mechanical.

I have information on how to check the voltage changes and the pressures at the generator sensor while accelerating. I don't know what you mean by mechanical at this point. The transmission is mechanically sound according to the transmission shop. It was rebuilt 15K ago. We have tried to eliminate mechanical variations by replacing everything mechanical. What did you mean by mechanical?

I had that same problem with the transmission staying in 3rd gear but my problem was with the crankshaft position sensor, it would run fine then just shift to 3rd and not rev over 2500 without sputtering, you could try replacing that sensor.
