yea this wont help but i have kind of the same prob with my 97 4x4 V8 and it will do it in reverse as well, especially in 4wd. i have been told it is time for a new torque converter.

it is probably your torque converter clutch solenoid (TCC). It is probably stuck on and the converter wants to automatically lock whenever in drive. For about 100-150 bucks you can get a new solenoid and install it yourself, ive done it and it takes a few hours or you can take it to the dealer. Mine got stuck in the off position so i had no lockup and my gas mileage got really bad.

that would be the case if it stalled. if it sounds like it wants to stall, it could be the IAC clogged.
