Message:
hello
i have a 2001 5.9 dakota....in the past i have owned auto tranny cars....and even other mopar tranny's(4.0 jeep)
i am concerned with my tranny on my the 5.9...when traveling below @50 mph..it seems too do alot of changing up in gears and then of course back down as the ending affect..i wanna call it searching for gears...to me it seems ok too upshift .....but why does it go back down a gear so soon..when it seems too still need to be in the higher gear.
maybe its just me or does it seem to be a problem????
thanks,
B.

I had a similar problem with both a 2000 and a 99.
With the 2000 DC Techs (as if) said it was probably the PCM and flashed...$hit lotta good that did. The bands were actually slipping in it and after 3 trips to the dealership and taking the shop manager for a ride in it they finally pulled the tranny and fixed the problem. One thing to do is to check your fluid level and then possibly adjust your TV cable depending on your milage. That is what fixed it with my 99. Had 60000 miles on it flushed the tranny changed the filter and adjusted the linkage about 1/8" aft and she runs and shifts better than new. Hope this helps a little and good luck.

i think the tranny in my truck sucks.. mine shifts through all gears before 35 so all thats left is O/D and i dont use that unless im over 50... the weird thing is it shifts through all gears within 5mph of 30mph... then i have to stand on it to get it to dropdown a gear im just gonna spend the mopney on the transgo shift kit and see if that helps.... did you have a shift kit on yours? or just stock?

I just installed a transgo kit. IT ROCKS!!
I had the same ("Mushy" it did what it wants) tranny. Drove me nuts. The kit improves the controll big time. And the cool thing is it down shifts for ya when your slowing down. I love it!

Which firmness setting did you go with, average & heavy duty or racing & show-off?

The newer transmissions are known for the "Shift Nirvana" problem (finding gears at random). This is commonly due to the Governor Pressure Solenoid and a (possibly) bad transducer. If you're going to install a shift kit (any of them)...get the new/updated sensors and save yourself a headache of tearing it back down again.

BTW: We carry the new valve bodies in stock now...TransGo kit preinstalled with integrated resistor as well. Core return program as well.

I took my truck in for the fishing of gears problem after it was brought to my attention by another guy on this site R/Truck that DC was replacing the valve bodies in the newer dakotas. So I took mine in to have them look at it and sure enough, they're gonna repace it under warranty. So I'm going to get a shift kit installed at the same time.

I went with between average and heavy duty setting. I also replaced Gov Press Sol along with the transducer at bernd's recomendation the same time. It also has you adjust your bands within the process. Before I did all that it was "Fishing" for gears and missing 3rd every once in a while on a downshift.
The only thing now is that is still "Hunts" only when the cruze is on over 50mph. Other than that, I recomend the Transgo kit if you want more positive shifts.

It's not the problem with the valve body...the warranty replacement also includes the new sensors. (These are known for causing the problems.) It's just easier for them to change out the entire valve body as it takes less time to diagnose/repair than taking the existing one out and fixing it.

Well he said after replacing the valve bodies in a few R/T's they've shifted fine. Hey if they're gonna replace the valve body w/ a whole new one at their expense how can you say no? The selenoid and transducer...are those located on or in the valvebody? If so they'll be replacing them by putting on a whole new valvebody right?
