Subject: Erratic idle, rough shifting

'01 Dakota, 4.7 w/at, 66k miles. Last fall the truck started being erratic about settling down to a steady idle after driving. Truck would seem to be idled down while in gear, but shifting to neutral would cause the rpm to jump to 1400 or 1500rpm then bounce up and down between 700 and 1200 until finally settling down after 30 seconds or so. Took it to my local independent guy, who has been very good on all my other vehicles, and they replace the Intake Air Controller. Still didn't fix it so 60 days later they replaced the IAC under warranty. Truck seemed to run better.

Now, it's very erratic again when shifted into neutral at a stop. Also, I seem to be getting some very rough downshifts and upshifts--more so than the usual Dodge "thunk". Any suggestions on how to get the idle stabilized again on this truck? Is the shifting related, or is that a separate problem?

Thanks for any suggestions,

DakotaCC

could be the TPS(throttle position sensor). check it before you replace it. unless you just like throwing parts at it.

Thanks, I'll ask about that when I take it in. I'm going to drop it off at the dealership where I bought it and have them check the TPS, the IAC, and do a drain and powerflush on the AT.
