Two things come to mind:

1. Faulty voltage regulator in the alternator

2. Faulty battery voltage meter

Did the reading go back to normal, or did it stay pegged? Try turning the ignition switch to the ON position without starting the engine and see if you get ~12VDC or if it pegs again. If it pegs again, I would suspect the gauge. Check the battery with your hand held volt metwe. If it's 12VDC, start the engine and see if it pegs. If it does, confirm the reading with your hand held volt meter at the battery itself. If the meter is intermittently getting pegged and the reading is correct, your alternator is probably going bad, and it could damage the battery and several other electrical devices.

Isn't that voltage regulator in the PCM ?
One more possibility I can think of - I've seen a bad engine ground strap cause an overcharging problem in an older GM, not sure if it could also do that for an '00 mopar or not.

I would bet that you're right! I mainly work on air cooled VWs, so my knowledge of other cars is limited. This group has been extremely helpful to me! Thanks for the correction. Also thanks for the tip on the engine ground strap. One more thing to check when this sort of thing happens!

Bucket - thanks for the acknowledgement. This site is a way for me to wind down after work and learn about my truck. There's some others here that contribute quite a bit too, and have taught me a lot. Still a few years away from "A" ! I think "daddio" is more helpful on a lot of stuff; there's a lot of guys here who deserve credit. Hopefully Garret will figure out his problem. See you in the funny papers !

Daddio - yeah, me neither; at least not one of those people who can't find anything to do after they're done with their regular job !

Garret - not all flashes are the killer flash. Just those that retard ignition timing.

YES, your alternator just took a dump!
It happened to me in my '89. The lights went very bright and I had to load the system to keep from burning things out.
The regulator is in the computer. I got a rebuilt alternator with the regulator built in instead of buying a new computer (PCM).
