i use fully synthetic 5w-30 oil in this motor only because i feel like it will hold up to the crazy miles i drive in my truck. My question is probably an easy answer but when i unscrew the oil fill cap there is a yellow waxy substance all around. What is this and why does it smell like gas?

I use only wal-mart oil and fram filters. This is the best combination for a dodge.

Your "fully" synthetic oil is foaming up.

Wal-Mart super tech is the best when it comes to oil. It doesn't foam up like other oils. Give it a try.

It doesn't foam because its non-detergent oil.
If it has detergents, it foams like crazy.

It's from condensation.
IIRC there was a TSB issued on the breather on the 4.7 that is supposed to correct this.
Also a bad PCV valve can cause this. When did you last clean/change yours?

This can also happen if you don't allow the engine to fully warm up for a long enough period to burn off the condensation...are you running a 180 degree t-stat?
