Anyone else experience a broken stud on the exhaust manifold? The drivers side upper-rear stud has broken off at the manifold. Seems like a pretty bad designed bolt just to hold the heat shield on.

So I see from a search that this is a pretty common occurrence. Is there a source for higher quality hardware, like Grade 8. Maybe NAPA? Also has anyone just replaced the studs with bolts and left the heat shield off?

Yup, had two of them break. They actually don't break, they rot. And yes a grade 8 would probably work better. The stud was eroded and I did make the mechanic show me the two busted ones. We installed all new. Just tack weld on a nut and they crank off pretty quick.

My Durango suffered both bolts breaking on cylinder #8 a while back. I had them all replaced.

And that that tack welding trick nuts onto broken bolts? That is a lifesaver. My B-I-L had two exhaust bolts broken down to the head on his Buick Roadmaster that he had no success in removing. His wife's uncle told him about the welded nut trick. Had it done and the bolts came out without any problem at all. Good trick to keep tucked away for a rainy day...

What's your left foot doing?

I have never removed one of these before was wondering about those kits where you drill the stud and tap in a spline with that special nut. Or would I be wasting my time ???? any tips greatly appreciated

I was wondering,

WHAT are you doing to even know the stud broke?

My 01 4.7 manual tranny,
227 RWHP
300 RWTQ...Rear Wheel!

I've done HO cams, a few other mods, and never evern looked at this stud.

Is it b/c you heard/found an exhaust leak?

Oh, now I see.

I'll keep this in mind just in case I develop an exhaust leak too!

I had that happen to my lower rear stud. I started hearing a faint exhaust leak, but I couldn't figure out exactly where it was coming from. I thought the manifold gasket was blown, but when I went to take the manifold off to replace it, I noticed the broken stud. Luckily the warranty covered it! Ended up with a new manifold too somehow. I hear it's a common problem, but apparently not common enough to do a recall. Bastards..
