Subject: Transmission Shop Foul Up??
IP: Logged

Message:
I just bought a 2000 Dakota 4.7 with 19,000 ORIGINAL miles (estate sale). Since it is 7 years old, I had the tranny serviced despite the low miles. Even though it was working perfectly before the service, now it shifts erratically. I checked the tranny fluid and when it was warm the stick was dry. I let it sit for a couple hours and checked it again and the fluid registered full. This is the opposite of what it is supposed to be. I cannot call the shop until Wednesday because of the holiday and, meanwhile, am afraid to drive the truck. Does anyone have any idea what they might have done to cause this?? Supposedly, all they did was replace the fluid and the filters (there are 2 in this tranny).

rick, your low on fluid, atf+4 is all you use it is not opposite like you said with engine off tranny dipstick will read overfull. when started (the way it is checked) it should read full when fully warmed up. sounds like your about 2 quarts low. I for sure would go back to the tranny shop and bitch about it. good luck,,,,,,,steved

I realized this morning that the full reading that I got later was with the motor not running (duh!). That would explain that. I guess the only problem is that there is too little fluid. I'm not touching it until I talk to the shop Wednesday. There is T fluid on the frame below the tranny. I will continue to hope that the low fluid is not the result of him screwing up the drain plugs.

My owner's manual says ATF-3. Is it 3 or 4? Is there a big difference?

I wouldn't assume it's only the low level until you verify whether they used ATF +4 or not. Your '00 45RFE tranny should only get +4, there might be a mistake in your owner's manual - as that was the first year for the 45RFE in a Dakota. My late year production '00 specifies +4; maybe they caught the mistake and updated later owner manuals. There is definitely a difference. I'd ask them what they used, rather than asking if they used +4; might get a more honest response. Be a good idea to make sure the gasket on the tranny pan is properly seated too; you may have lost fluid to a leak there. The gasket is reusable, but must be seated properly.

Seems like that was about when they were making the transition from +3 to +4. Same thing happened with my '89 Dak. The owner's manual clearly states to use Dextron II, when we all clearly know that's totally wrong for the overdrive models. Regardless, I don't think they even make +3 any more since +4 came online.
