Subject: Serpentine belt tensioner
IP: Logged

Message:
Has anybody ever had any problems with the belt tensioner itself? I have 150,000 miles and I'm debating on whether to change it or just change the idler and tensioner pulleys.

I've regreased the pulleys a few times by popping the seal off the bearing, packing in grease, and then putting it back on. But when colder temperatures in the morning I can hear some noise, so it may be time to at least get the pulleys. The bearings seem fine, but the noise was coming from that side not the power steering pump side.

I don't know what year Dak you have but, My 2000 4.7 has about 165,000 miles on it and I just had to replace my wholoe serpentine belt tensioner assembly last week. I don't think it is that common of a problem with the Daks though, They had to otrder the whole assembly. they had the pulley assemblies in stock seperately.

Yes mine is 2000 4.7 also, I see Oreilly auto parts has what you said, but the whole assembly looks like it is order item, only roughly $60-$65 though.

Why did you have to replace? Did it break?

I've heard stories (on other cars) or breaking and causing damage.

I'm somewhat concerned as I'm planning long trip in a few weeks.

Didn't break. It just started to get weak and allowed the belt to slip. Especially after it got wet. The belt slipped so bad, it started to smoke!! It was kinda funny. I ordered mine through Advance Auto. It was $53. I would go ahead and replace it for peace of mind. By the way, nice pick on the 4.7!!! I have had mine since 02 and love the dog snot out of it!! Anytime you want upgrades.....one shop.....KRCperformance!!!!!!!!

No big deal. Anyone with even an inkling of mechanical knowledge should be able to change out the belt tensioner. Take the belt off, pull the center bolt and it comes off as a unit. No worries about it popping off and whacking you or anything. you should be able to do the whole job in under 20 minutes.......that's while drinking a beer, of course!!

Oil change guy sez I need to replace serpentine belt
on my 02 Dakota 4.7L V8 with 203k miles. Are there
any tricks I should know before I start? The
diagram shows the middle lower left pulley as the
starting place. Is this the tensioner? Do I just
unbolt the tensioner and slip off the belt and
install the new belt?
Thanks
paul

FIRST....... put a wrench on the bolt in the face of the pulley and slip your belt off. Then remove the whole tensioner assembly. It is a pretty straight forward cut and dry process. It took me about 15 minutes to complete the whole process, no big deal. It is basically a clock spring mechanism that keeps tension on the serpentine belt.

Can anyone help? I have a 99 Dodge Dakota 5.9. I recently started hearing it squeal when i started it so I asked a mechanic friend and he said to use some belt conditioner and that should solve the problem. I did that and the following day I started it and it was louder and didn't stop. Before it would stop after the truck warmed up but not now. The belt seems pretty tight. Do I need to loosen the belt to stop the squealing? If so, how do I loosen the belt? It is a new belt so I know it's not that I need a new one. Its a bad loud squealing so it makes me a bit nervous to drive it because if it comes off I will be stranded as we all know. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

When changing the belt it won't fly at u unless the trucks
running :p just a bit of humor to start things off...

Ok the tensioner if similar to others is one nut on the back
side of the bracket the tensioners bolted to.

If your having trouble replacing the belt make sure your
looping correctly and try to leave a smooth surface for last.
Also if still having a lot of trouble... get a longer wrench :)
the tensioners have a good amount of travel, the longer
your leverage the easier it is to move them farther

The squeeling on the 5.9 could be the belt but if its tight its
not likely, take the belt off and spin all the pullies by hands,
see if you feel any resistance in the bearings. Could be one
going bad making the noise. Also check your power steering
fluid if u haven't done so already.

Hope

Well I checked the power steering fluid and it's full. Also, I changed the tensioner and bought a new belt even though the one that was on there was only a couple months old. I don't know if this could be the problem or not but since i put a new tensioner on there the squealing isn't AS bad but it's still pretty bad, but i noticed it doesn't squeal so bad when i'm at a stop. When i speed up the oil pressure goes from 40 to around 80 and the squealing gets louder. I really hope this isn't the case but could the crank pulley be bad? I know it's alot of trial and error but from what i could tell everything else is doing as it should. The only thing that's acting different is the oil pressure. I checked the oil and it's low but not dangerously low. Its coming due for an oil change so i assume thats why it's a little low.

Did you check the idler pulley also? Did you check any of the other pulleys for wobble or misalignment? Take the belt off and spin all of the pulleys to make sure that they are not causing the problem.

Oh and a true mechanic friend would not have recommended belt dressing. Using that stuff just masks the true problems.

I recently Changed the tensioner pulley, idler pulley, alternator, water pump, and belt this last couple weeks and The belt only still squeals when I apply the gas to the motor not when its just idling there is no aqueal at all. I dont know what else it could be any other suggestions

If you only changed the tensioner pulley you went
the wrong route. The entire tensioner assembly
(including arm) should have been changed.

Yes i changed it all completely. It's still squealing a bit. I think it is one of the other pulleys. It seems the pulley that is connected to the fan is wobbly so i'm wondering if that is the problem

That is proably it. If that pulley is wobbling you better look like replacing the waterpump. That's is how I noticed mine going out. I caught it before it starting leaking coolant. If you don't replace it soon you may just find the fan meeting the radiator. Not good.

For sure, The bearings are shot in the water pump,
Get it changed before it does more damage.
(total loss of coolant = seize motor.or Fan through

How do I know if the tensioner is providing enough tension? Does anyone know a spec or how to measure that?

Everything in front of the block was replaced 2 years ago. I've always suspected the water pump too.
