Almost daily my truck seems to idle high. First time I stop, be it in traffic or at a red light, or my destination, my truck will be at about 1000rpm, and usually it's at 500-600. Sometimes it will jump up after I've already stopped and I have to lay on the brakes, or it will just be high as soon as I stop. This happens no matter what it seems. It does it with the A/C on/off, in park/drive, hot/cold. I've cleaned the intake and it seemed to slow down, but went back to what its been doing. I was going to try putting in some fuel system cleaner and checking the TPS, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. If it's not the tps, what else should I check?

Also, this is kind of off topic, but when I start up my truck and the engine is cold I can hear the rockers rattle and then the noise fades after about 30 seconds. Is this because they are loose? or just dry?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First things I would check:
Throttle Position Sensor might be giving up the ghost.
Idle Air Compensator plunger could be sticking.
Both of those are screwed/bolted to the driver's side of the Throttle Body. Can't miss them, they're the ones with electrical connectors.

Is the throttle plate area clean?
*DO NOT* clean the throttle plate area with a spray cleaner. It will leach into the Throttle Position Sensor and cause problems with driveability. Apply the cleaner to a rag, and use the rag to clean up the deposits.

I thought it was the TPS, just wanted more opinions before I started replacing stuff. I have a spare 4.7 out of a 00 (i think) dakota from my uncle, how could I test that TPS? It looks to be the same part. I tested his the same way I tested mine, and they were both giving the same type of readings. Chances are I wasn't testing it correctly and I can't seem to find the website to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

when you say throttle plate, do you mean the butterfly? If so, I had that cleaned by my girlfriend's uncle who is a dodge mechanic in july, and I checked it yesterday and it didn't that dirty.

thanks for the reply, so far it sounds like easy fixes. me likes.

Yes, many people call the throttle plate a butterfly.

Curiosity wants to know when these symptoms started to appear?

Since you have this spare '00 engine, try sticking in the whole throttle body assembly from it onto yours, that way the TPS and Idle Air Compensator will bolt on as a unit. Connect it all up and go for a test drive.
The '00 throttle body, if memory serves, is 65mm diameter bore, and your '02 is 68mm diameter bore. On the back of the throttle plate (butterfly) will be stamped 65 or 68; that's how you tell them apart. Shouldn't make any noticeable difference for the test.

Let us know how it goes.

I won't be able to do any work on it until this weekend, but when I do I'll post an update. I did notice a few months ago that a couple vacuum hoses were cracked, and I did cut the ends off that were cracked. It didn't seem to change anything. I checked all the other hoses and didn't notice any other cracks. Only other place I can really think of is a leaking intake, and when my mom's van had a leaky intake her gas mileage went up, I haven't noticed an increase in MPG (at least I hope this isn't as good as it gets) And to answer DanK's curiosity, I noticed it maybe 6 months ago, but thought it was the weather or something since it doesn't do it ALL the time (just most of the time). But I also had 2 bad 02 sensors, they were replaced. I'll try to get under the hood saturday afternoon or sunday.
