Here's the scoop. Just bought an 04' Dakota SLT 4x4 4.7L V8 club cab... and perhapes one of the best purchases I have made - for vehicles that is. I would like to make this thing look badass - meaning - larger tires/rims running boards and whatever reccomendations you all might have. I'm not sure where to start nor am I a mechanic. (brother is a mechanic and could help with questions I may have when needed) but I want this to be my project and have this truck last as long as possible. So could anyone help me where to start looking for ideas, costs etc... I'm a 35 yr old dad and this would be a cool project to do with my 7 yr old boy.

thanks for any and all help.

chris

Low rider wheels and tires
wing on the roof
APC stickers all over it
Fart-can muffler

Not a pretty picture, is it?

Don't make it look stupid.
Take your time and make sure it's the right mod for the look you want to project. After all, the way your truck looks is a statement about you. And believe it or not, people judge you by your ride.

thanks for the advice... and you're right - that picture you made is SOO NOT what I'm aiming for... however larger rims/tires I am looking for, but have no clue how to go about doing that.

thanks for the welcoming and advice!

Mine is stock, only changes:

First thing I would like to do is raise it up a few. I have 4 bars in back and it has 245's on it right now. I know it can hold 265's without rubbing, but I would still like to raise it up more. What is needed for this to happen?

BrianJ - I'm interested in custom more than offroad and speed. with the gas prices going up -speed is probably not a good idea. I already have a heavy foot. :)

I was going to bring it in to a tire shop and ask what I can do to raise it up more for a larger tire, but thats like talking to the government and asking how much more money can I give them!

Chris,
you might want to add a few speed parts to help with gas on those bigger tires. Speed patrts will raise your mileage if you can keep your foot out of it. After all of my mods to my 4.7, I'm getting 24mpg hwy. I have a RC 2wd though. But still its up from the factory estimates. Just something to think about.

larger wheels are a waste of money as far as I'm concerned. I don't know what your interests are, but if you decide to lift it, go with a 2 inch body lift and 4 or so inch suspension. No more than 2 inches of body, because it will look stupid. The only reason I am supporting body lifts, is because it makes working under the truck 10 times easier especially if you ever do a tranny job. At the same time that you lift it, invest in new tires and wheels. You will need ones that space out a tad for some reason due to the lift I'm pretty sure. Then go with 33" BFG A/T ko's. You can't go wrong with that setup. Having a lifted Dakota is pretty sweet in my opinion, because its not nearly as common as say, a lifted K-5 or a Toyota pickup.
