the power steering pressure switch is located on a fitting on the hp hose coming off of the pump. there has been mention of this switch leaking and fluid following the inside of the wriing harness to one of the O2 sensors giving a fault for that O2. that could also cause a drop in fuel mileage.

Thanks, daddio.
I do remember a few threads some time ago about power steering switch leaking fluid down the O2 sensor wires.
Couldn't find mention of the switch anywhere else in the FSM, and silly me, didn't think to go lift the hood and look for it.

So I have confirmed that this is the problem. What action should I take. Can the old pressure sensor be re-sealed and the o2 sesnor cleaned up or do I need to replace them.?

The power steering pressure switch cannot be re-sealed.
The issue with the O2 sensor is that the power steering fluid (ATF) has run down the wiring harness, through the connector, and down the O2 sensor wires, leaching into the sensor's innards. There's really no way to get the ATF out of the sensor, so a replacement is in order on that item, too.
Also, the wiring harness and especially the O2 sensor connector needs to be cleaned of the ATF, or any remaining fluid in the harness is gonna gravitate back into that brand new O2 sensor.

Maxx, A new power steering pressure switch is only $20-$23 at the dealership. I've bought 3 of them. I've also replaced the main engine wiring harness and two O2 sensors when the original PS switch broke and gummed it up with power steering fluid. That left me down $1500 and really pissed off. 0551 is a code that everyone should take seriously.

I check the electrical wire connector on the PS switch for fluid at every oil change. I recomend everybody with a year 2000, 4.7 V8, do this. It only takes a 7/8" wrench and 5 minuetes of your time to replace it.

If you have any other questions send me an email to thshome@msn.com

P0208-FUEL INJECTOR NO.8 CIRCUIT
When Monitored: With battery voltage greater than 10 volts. Auto Shutdown Relay
energized. Engine speed less than 3000 rpm.

Set Condition: No inductive spike is detected after injector turn off.

What that means is the PCM does not detect the voltage spike that follows injector firing.
Suspect the injector.

It would probably only take 15 minutes to switch the enjector with another one and see if the code then represents the cylinder you switched that #8 injector into.

That's always a free way to rule something out.

P0121 = Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Range/Performance Problem.

Your Dakota has Electronic Throttle Control?
My 2004 FSM does not list this code, so I'm guessing your Dakota is a later model.

For your files. Bookmark the web page below. I think you'll find it helpful for future code look-ups. OBDII and CAN has made these codes fairly universal, so P0121 on a Dakota is same as P0121 on Ford or GM.

After reading the other posts yesterday, and the problem was so bad going home from work that I was worried of a catastrophic failure with the truck, I had decided to try the TPS. $48.99 and ten minutes of my time and BAM! Runs like a dream.

A couple of other things that are less pressing

1: Signal lights work intermitantly, when you rattle the key they start working again.

2: My air bag sensor light is on, No reason that I can figure out.

Thanks for all the help you guys are a great recource!

Dan K - "Electronic Throttle Control ?"
I'd be surprised if your '04 doesn't have a TPS (throttle position sensor) too. My '00 has a TPS. It's not an electronic throttle control; just part of the information the PCM processess while it sets parameters for things like spark advance and fuel delivery. It's just what it says, a sensor that reports the position of the throttle.

Busted.
You're right, of course.
My FSM didn't list P0121 (skipped right over it), and only lists P0122, 0123 and 0124 as codes for the TPS, so I guess I was drawn to the Pedal Position Sensor part, instead of using the old noodle to reason things out.

I'd blame it on the heat, but it's pouring down snow outside.

If the signal lights work when you rattle the key, I'd think that would point to the ignition switch. Unless you are rattling them vigorously enough to jostle the multi switch lever - another possibility.
As for the the air bag, I think I vaguely remember a recall for the clock spring (in the steering wheel) for some year. Did you post the year of your Dak ? Maybe I missed it.

The year is 2001, I was thinking it might be the clock spring tha is causing the signals but not the air bag- that is good information. Thanks Dan

Your welcome. Did a quick search on recall forum, looks like there was a clockspring recall for some '00-'01. Might want to have dealer run your VIN for it.

Hey 4.7 Magnum:
Did your issue with the multiple fuel injector codes ever return? If so, how'd you fix it because I have the same problem. I'm thinking it's most likely the PCM.
thanks
