I have a '06 Dakota with the 4.7HO in it and for the last few months, on cold start up, the engine knocks or kind of sounds like a diesel. If goes away after a while though. I think someone on here might have talked about this before, but could I get refreshed on this issue. I bought it new in February, so I know I can take it into the shop and have them mess with it, but I am just wondering if anyone had this problem and what it ended up being, just so I am prepared when I do take it in.

01 next gen 4.7
I know the sound well. My 4.7 did that for quit some time and I was told and also read on many posts that 4.7's just do that after a while?! I grew up working on old chevys 59/68. That was not a good enough answer for me and I knew that it had to be leading to some type of repair and could be fixed as the motor did not make that sound before. As time went on so did some timming parts. For me it turned out to be in the timming realm. It ultimatly lead to: One timming chain, one timming sprocket and a timminig tensioner. Dont frustraite yourself by taking it to a mech and asking them to find the problem.
They must do a tear down of your timming chaine areas to find the noise maker ie : chain, sprocket,tensioner. I am sure that if you ( as barney fith would say)"NIP IT IN THE BUD" it will cost you alot less to do the repair. Dont be miss lead and let it go on, is my advice!
I have 99,500 miles on my 01. I bought a extendend warranty to 100,000 in 2000 when I purchased the truck new. I have been very satisfied with the next gen 4.7 throughout the years.
I would like to put a 4.7 in a 68 camaro.
