Hello there, I was just trying to see if anyone could help out a truck idiot? 00' 4x4 dakota ext cab 4.7. I have noticed a very slight leak towards the back of my truck where the axle is, theres some large round thing in the center of the back axle, and just recently it has formed a very small leak? it doesnt look or smell like oil, but im no truck expert. Also my check engine light came on about a month ago, and i notice NO performance issues at all, but i did the on/off/on/off/on trick and it instantly came up p done. Oh and to add just a little more, lol. I also have formed a small ticking when i start my truck that seems to go away for the most part when it warms up. Someone told me to top off the oil with a thicker oil or possible some transmission fluid and that would work. True or not? any suggestions or help would be great on any or all 3 issues im having, Thanks

Your explanation isn't so great but I believe your talking about the pumpkin in the center of the rear end. If so, if the cover with 10 or so bolts is leaking remove it and clean good. Use black silicon as the new gasket. this is what should be used now from factory. If it is the yoke seal leaking, this may be beyond your capability to repair.

as for the ck engine light autozone will check for free, and the ticking sound depending on the mileage and maintenance record might be one of two things either a worn rocker arm or i have read in other posts that the 4.7l's have somewhat an issue with sludge build up preventing top end lubrication you might want to check into that, before adding thicker oil.I noticed you said 4x4, have you driven accross water that might have seapped into your rear axle? could explain the no oil smell on whats leaking out.
