Tonight I changed the filter on my 4wd 2002 Dakota. This is the one with the spin on filter.

2 Questions.

When I took the pan off, there was no pan gasket, only black silicon. Did this come like the factory like this, or has some ole boy changed the fluid before I bought the truck?

And, The dealer told me 5 to 6 Quarts of ATF4. I put in 6 and it was pretty high on the dipstick after I ran it and checked it in neutral (on level ground). Is 6 the standard amount for a fluid/filter change?

Yep mine had the silicone on it when i changed mine as well and i have had the truck since new. Did you change both filters? When I changed mine i replaced both and pulled a line of the cooler and flushed around 10-12 litres though it till it was all clean coming out.

Their is no gasket stock (at least on 2000).

The Right Stuff (black) is ideal for this, if you don't want a gasket, but tougher to get the pan off later.

The first gasket I had was the black fiber type, kind of seeped a little.

Last change was a cork type and it is working good so far.

I put in 7.5 quart after both filter change, but I'm a little high. 5-6 is a good start, 7 probably enough with both filters changed and lengthy drip time (no flush).

Mine is 2wd, not sure if 4wd has different pan, etc.?
