Subject: Engine light just came on
IP: Logged

Message:
2000 Dakota 4.7 V8 When i start it up, it revs to about 2000RPM then slowly comes down to about 900RPM. It also idles up and down alittle when parked. I also have noticed that when driving down the road that the transmission likes to go from overdrive back to 3rd and then back to overdrive quite frequently. Does anyone know what my problem might be?

Also, when i turn the steering wheel back and forth while parked, i get a faint "clunking" noise. (a bit of a squeeeeeeek as well) Does something need to be greased on the steering between the steering wheel and the bottom of the rod that goes through the firewall? Any answers would be appreciated!

first thing to do is find out why the light came on. turn the key on/off/on/off/on, by on i don't mean start, then the PCM will display codes in the odometer. they'll look like this P01498 or whatever and when it's done it will display Pdone. post what you find back here.

that faint "clunking" noise could be a couple of things. possibly the outer tierods. the idle could be a couple of things also.

first thing, read the codes.

4.7 Magnum, I had the same problem with it idleing funny, and mine would also shift into 3rd and back to OD driving down the highway. NEW TPS. about $30 at Advance. Very simple and easy to install. I hope that is your problem because it is easy to install. As for the clunking, I have no idea. Sorry.

Ok so tell me if 3 injectors are malfuctioning, why does it still run fine and have all the power that it normally has? What should i do now? Have the 3 injectors replaced? If so, it doesn't sound like a cheap fix.

Ok, i will try that. After i do that, how do i erase the codes in the computer? (negative cable off the battery for a minute, right?) Then wait for the engine light to come on again? I am just a "backyard mechanic" here lol

Go to Autozone and clear the codes. Just ask them to turn your check engine light off. Then drive for 50 to 100 miles and see if they come back on. Also while their at it have them see what codes are comimg up on their com.

4.7, yes disconnect the negative cable on the battery. turn the key to start for about 30 seconds or so, turn the key to off and then reconnect it. all the Autozones i've been to will NOT erase the codes.

make sure all those connectors are clean and tight on the injectors. your idle problem is probably a dirty TB(throttle body) or IAC(idle air control) valve. buy a can of Seafoam, follow the directions on the can. this stuff really works better than any other fuel system cleaner i've tried.

Ok will do that. Thank You. I appreciate everyones input and hope to have this solved very soon. Does this
on/off/on/off/on thing with the key work for all vehicles with a digital odometer or just Dodge?

Your throttle body or IAC could be dirty. But the problems you are having driving down the road (changing gears) sounds like a faulty TPS.

the only experience i have with the key trick is my Dak. '00-'04 Daks i know for sure it works. some say that some of the earlier Daks, OBDI it works and flashes the check engine light. it doesn't work on '99 daks and maybe a couple of other years. i think every manufacturer has their own thing. pre-96 GM, there is a place in the diagnostic plug to jump with a wire and it flashes the codes on the CEL. it works on my sons '93 saturn.

I just got back from Auto Zone and bought a can of SeaFoam ($6.99) and a can of STP Throttle body and air intake cleaner ($2.99) The guy behind the counter said that some speed sensor on the transmission could be the cause of it idling up and down and going from overdrive to 3rd gear and back to overdrive. The guy said that eventually the speed sensor will trip the engine light as well if there is something wrong with it. Before i left, i checked the #2, #4, and #7 injector to make sure it was pushed down and the plug was pushed in and when i left for Auto Zone, it seemed to have much more power and it ran much smoother. Hopefully there isn't a problem with the injectors themselves. Thanks again everyone! Now all i have to figure out is that noise in the steering wheel when i turn. The right side tierod end is new and all the ball joints were new 2 years ago.

I followed the directions on the back of the can of throttle body cleaner and sprayed the throttle body. You wouldn't believe what i wiped out of the throttle body! The can said to use a soft cloth to dry out the throttle body after spraying and the cloth was just covered with this black stuff! I went down to the gas station with the can of seafoam and followed the directions on the can for putting it in the gas tank. Poured the can of seafoam in the gas tank then filled it with 93 octane. Now hopefully it will run better and be more responsive. Also, the guy at Auto Zone said that after awhile, if the problem with the engine light doesn't happen again, the computer will clear itself of the codes. Is that one true? Thanks again!

if the problem is corrected for, i think, 3 consecutive run cycles and a certain amount of miles it will.

That sounds good to me! I will run the truck like i normally do till the fuel tank runs down to maybe a quarter tank and then i will try the key thing again with the odometer and see if the codes have cleared! While i am here, maybe someone could tell me a good type of muffler to buy so i can get a decent sound and maybe more power out of my 4.7? I will need to replace everything from the converter back. Has stock exhaust on it now.

save your money from buying the cat back exhaust. on the earlier 4.7's the bottleneck in the exhaust is the y-pipe. replace that and use a Dynomax 17748 replacement muffler.

some of the 4.7 guys have run dual exahust but, it can get expensive unless you can DIY. i think soem have used the Predator catback with good results. and it is probably the least expensive.

The popping while turning could possibly be the steering intermediate shaft. I had the same problem with mine while it was still under warranty. The dealer replaced the lower shaft and it corrected the problem. I think there is also a TSB on the intermediate shaft.

Ok so what is going to happen if i keep driving it with a bad steering intermediate shaft? I am also going to do another check on the tie rods and ball joints in a few minutes. The rod that goes through the firewall in the engine compartment is kind of rusty. The knuckles are rusty too. It sounds like the noise is coming from right where the shaft goes through the firewall.
