Alright, I know we all love our trucks, but here's something I was thinking last night, If you take a 4.7L super/turbo charge it what are you looking at 350hp? maybe a little more, at a cost of $4-5000 just for a kit + install.

Now I own a 2002 CC sport with all the options including all the HD options, now if I trade it in, in 2004 or whenever they come out with the 5.7L, I'll be down a few grand, but I'll have a new truck and the 5.7L, which is supposed to make so much more power than the 4.7L we have.

can you see where I'm going with this?

If they'd just release the thing! I was waiting fairly patiently for the 5.7 Dakota to come out for a while.... then I couldn't hold out any longer. My guess is that the only way to get the 5.7 in a Dakota will be with the new SRT-8. Who knows how long it will be until that becomes a reality.... 2004 or 2005 model year? We've been hearing about these 5.7s for a good long while now. I'm ready to take one for a spin!

They may make it but I would be willing to bet with that much HP that it will be pricey. Look at the SRT-10 they could have just dropped a viper motor in it and sold it. But not they added so much other performace stuff that it will probably be out of reach for the average performance enthusiast.

...and you know that they won't put it in a 4x4 Dak.

Why is that? I have wondered for a while why the companies are willing to put bad a$$ engines in street trucks but not in a 4X4.

if the 5.7L is supposedly going to replace the 5.9L, what about the 4x4 QC?
that's my only argument on that.

i work at a dodge dealership and from what i hear they will not put the 5.7 in the dakota and from what i hear they don't plan on it. the dakota is basicly going to stay the same except for the body style and the r/t and the only thing they are changing on the r/t is instead of a 245-250 hp 360 they are going to start putting in a 300+ hp 360 crate from mopar and trow in a mopar pcm. thats the word i heard so don't give your hopes up
not likely but rumers of supercharging the r/t are out too.

but what you could do is buy a 5.7 when they come out this fall and the computer and drop it in your dak's but with that much money getting the eng. and the fabrication that would be needed you could fix up your stock 360 faster than the hemi
but the hemi's are only coming out in the 2500-3500 ram and will be coming for the 1500 ram shortly after but it will be a matter of time before it hits the dakota after a high demand for it comes out

Weel it's one-oh-them-things. I've only kept one P/U truck more than 3 years in my life anyway. To keep this one more than 3 years would really be a drag. It's 5 months old now and has 7,000 miles on it, SO, in about 2 1/2 years from now when it has about 40,000 miles on it and is 3 years old I'll trade it for a Dakota with the 5.7 Liter Hemi and put the Kenne Bell SC or turbo set I have on this truck then on it. Wha-LA, ready for another 3 years. I married my Wife not my Truck, so she is the only till death do us part.

From life's experiences, I'd say that the farther that you get away from a company-designed and factory-build vehicle the more time, $$$, and aggravation/grief it'll cost you; exponentially, too.

You gotta know where on that curve you can comfortably sit, get the jollies you're looking for, and still sleep nights.

IMHO, if you really need a truck for general use and occasional enthusiast adventure (whether that means 4-wheeling or bracket racing for you), best to get something stock that is technically top-end now, and make whatever straightforward relatively inexpensive mods you can, and try to be satisfied with it.

(This is not the same as having the money and/or being radical enough to have a separate vehicle just for your hobby. Like a purpose-build toyota just for crawling, or a small, high-performance airplane for going to Reno with, or whatever).

Putting a new motor into a vehicle that was never designed (or at least manufactured) to carry it means you have to do a lot of special engineering yourself. If you have the time, $$$, experience/ability, and if the new motor size, weight and interface points (like flex-plate) are close, great. But, a lot of times it's better to let someone else make the mistakes first, take notes on what went right and wrong, and use this to calculate more exactly what it will cost YOU, and what you'll eventually end up with.
