I just recently finished my 3.9 to 5.2 swap with the correct computer/ wiring harness and i set the timing but it still wont idle. it also pops when reving and also does not have a clean acceleration when giving it gas. i was wondering if anyone knew what my problem might be. Maybe fuel injectors or a vaccum leak????

Im confused because as far as I know the only way to set the timing on a late model 318 or 360 is to roll the engine over on compression stroke for number one cylinder and line the mark up on the damper with the tdc mark on the timing cover(its the one directly in the middle). Then you can drop the distributor in lining the rotor button up with the notch on the pickup coil. That notch lines up with the number one tower on the cap. This can be a b!@tch if the engine is already in the truck because there is a gear that runs both the distibutor and oilpump off the back of the cam and if it is not indexed right the distributor will not set correctly in the block. You have to pull the distributor and move theh gear a tooth at a time till you can get the rotor on the distributor and that notch I mentioned before to line up and also get the distributor housing fully seated. When its in correctly both the notch and the rotor will point to the passenger side of the truck. After that the computer takes over the timing so rotating the dist. will not really do much good.

lowkota, what year is the 5.2 engine? i don't remember exact years but some motors(very early 88-90? daks) the timing is set by the distributor. later models, turning the dist. adjusts the injector sync and has NO affect on timing. maybe someone more knowledgeable than me can clarify exactly which years.

yep, you adjusted the injector sync. turn the dist back to near where it was originally.

you can rotate engine to TDC #1 cyl. pull the dist cap, loosen dist and turn the dist to line up the rotor & cyl mark inside dist. that should get you back to stock setting.

it is good to go about +6 on the inj sync but it is best done with a DRB/ scantool.
