Check the paint code on the door panel then take it to a paint shop and ask them. My black Dak is paint code PX8, not sure on the name of the black though, midnight black, jet black, etc.

Your correct PX8 is the paint code and my paint system Nexa Autocolor calls it Black Crystal. I would think others do to.

Damn, the black Dodges got the short end of the deal. My red Dakota never had the clear coat burn off, but my black one has some spots and most noticeably the roof.

Finally... a V8. '01 Dodge Dakota RC, 4.7, 5-speed, 3.92 LSD. = R/T Killer.
well at least a stock one

You have been fortunate then if you paint code is PR4/ Poppy Red then then do tend to chalk up the clear coat from the sun/UV breaking down the clearcoat. You must remember the black (in PA, in the west and south they are much hotter) get 170 degrees in sun and red only get 155 to 160. This 10 degrees over the(and amount of UV and heat reflected and absorbed) years makes a huge difference. Actually about any dark color.

I know... I have seen a lot of black Dodges with horrible paint jobs. I am not too worried, I plan on having the whole thing completely painted.

The clear coat on my 2004 is starting to mess up on the fender flares. Is there any way to at least slow it down or get it to stop - looks like little pock marks showing.

Is this on the lower parts? If it is it is from stones ans depris like that. I see it everyday. If the paint was not factory it would be chipping and peeling VS. pitting something awful. To answer your question there is several things you may be able to do. First do you have mudflaps? If not you may want to get some. The fender flares are actually doing their job. This paint issue could be the bottom rear of your bed panels or the bottoms of fender or doors. Another place dakotas tend to chip(flares or not flares both mine that I have now I have had to fix.) on the very bottom front edge of the bed, both sides. You may have to bend or lay down to look at them. Another thing you can do is pound the wax to them. The wax actually does deflect the stones to some extent. the aftermarket industry does make a clear chip guard (SEM) that may be another soultion if above is not help. Let me know

I looked closer last night - looks more like stone chips than anything. No mudflaps on truck, I was hoping with the flares they wouldn't be necessary. Apparently I was wrong. thanks.
