Subject: Question on AC Compressor

Message:
My AC started making a whirring/metalic noise and now it smells like brake pads or clutch when they heat up... I take it that the clutch is shot on the ac? can I rebuild that or should I be looking to replace the compressor? the AC doesnt work now.... the belt hasnt come off so I dont think it seized up its an 01 dakota 4.7 quad cab 4X4 113,000 miles in Mass.

new replacement clutches should be available
{then again you never know}
but personally i'd try the new clutches
before shelling out the bucks for a new compressor

I had the same problem with the noise and smell coming from the A/C compressor. I also had some black colored flaky stuff spitting out of the clutch on the front of the compressor. I called the Dodge Dealership and they wanted $660.00 for a new compressor! I bought a brand new compressor online for $345.00 after i hung up on the Dodge dealer. Come to find out, the Dodge Dealership gets their compressors from the same company that i bought my compressor from online! I paid half the price too. Now my problem is after i had a qualified A/C tech recharge my system, the air isn't that cold. The guage on the can of 134a goes up to the top of the full area, then drops back to about 20 to 25 psi during the short cycling of the compressor. Anyone know where i should start? No leaks have been found either!

what does your "qualified A/C tech" think? sounds like you're still low on R134a. find a decent set of gages and start there. or could have a restriction somewhere in the system. did you change the drier also?

I agree with daddio with the ac set to max the compressor shouldnt short cycle. If you have to jump the low pressure switch with a paper clip and check your gauges it should drop to the real time system pressure, then you can begin filling usually 40-45 psi is the working pressure on the lowside and 150-170 on the high side depnding on temp and atomospheric condition. Once enough refridgerent is added the compressor should stay on by itself with out jumping the lp switch.

hey dont get one of these wal mart cans and expect to recarge your system. it will never work. just spend the 90 bucks at your local shop and get it done right. they just dont put 134a in but you also have to put a vacume on the system too. thats something you can never do in your driveway.

Yes i replaced the drier as well. My wife's nephew works for a large refrigeration company that services reefers on big trucks. He used his guages with the long hoses and had everything perfect when he replaced the compressor. He evacuated the system for 45 minutes with the vaccumn pump he brought with him. It's not a huge deal but since the truck has A/C i might as well keep it working. Is there a certain temperature air that should be coming out of the vents? Also want to say that this truck is the best damn truck i have ever owned and will buy another when the time comes!

it sounds like the work was done properly but probably not charged enough. you should be able to get a 20-25 deg drop in temp on the air coming out the vents.

Thanks for the info! I will definetly test the air coming out of the vents. When i hook the hose from the can of R134a to the low side with the engine running, and the A/C on MAX and HI, the guage on the can drops to about 20psi with the compressor engaged and rises to about 40-45 psi with the compressor disengaged. (short cycling) Is this normal?

NO, it's low on refrigerant. and don't trust that rinky dink gage on the can either. it shuold be 40-45 running. when the comp is not running the system should equalize pressures between the high and low sides.

get some gages and R134a.
