Hello all, I am having a problem with my '96 318 dak and wondered if anybody could help a fellow out. The engine has 145,000 miles on it and is still running ok, but it likes to smoke on start-up (sometimes a little, sometimes ALOT). It also likes to use 2-3 qts. of oil between changes (not a typo!). Last time I changed the oil, I decided to take a peek at the spark plugs to see if they could tell me anything. Well, they were all ok except for piston #8, which had some oil residue on it. I figured that I may have had a bad piston ring or head gasket. However, today I was looking into the intake manifold by looking down through the throttle body, and thought i saw a good deal of oil laying at the bottom of it, so I carefully fed a rag down the throttle body, and when I brought it back up, it was soaked with oil. Now, I'm pretty sure that this is not normal, and I can't remember the oil path through the engine off-hand, so could my oil problem be a bad intake manifold gasket? Or am I completely off?

bad plenum gskt. you can replace with (good)stock type about $40.00- $60.00, (better)hughes engines plenum kit about $86.00 or (best) change over to the M1 style intake manifold about $599.00. which one depedns on what you're doing with your truck.

Yeah, but you can find so much more for 318/360 motors. I like my gas-mileage though.

Finally... a V8. '01 Dodge Dakota RC, 4.7, 5-speed, 3.92 LSD. = R/T Killer.
well at least a stock one

Besides the bad valley pan gasket, I'd also suspect a bad valve seal at the #8 piston - because of the oily #8 plug and the smoke at start up.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

thank you all very much for your input. I have been in connecticut for the last few days, so I'll change the gasket this weekend. Now, should I clean the intake? If I should what should I use? And to change the valve seal, I would have to take the head off...correct? Shoe, Congrats on finally getting a V8...it's about time! :)

Its possible to change a valve seal with the head on; using compressed air at the spark plug hole to hold the valve in place. I think most of your oil consumption is likely due to the valley pan leak though.

Well, when I took the intake off, the plenum gasket was in about 20 pieces, so I replaced that, and the smokey start-ups have vanished. My mpg has improved, and the engine is running better. However, the intake runners and the heads all have a coating of black from this problem:( Thanks to all for the help!
