Subject: Door locks squeal & partial inop

Message:
A few months ago, the power door locks on my 2000 Dakota started making a terrible squeeling noise on both lock and unlock.

In addition to the horrible death-inducing squeel noise...

- The power lock/unlock of the passenger-side door fails to lock/unlock, but you can still lock/unlock with the key, or by using your hand

- The driver's side door, once locked, will not let you open the door from the inside (the lever to open the door won't rotate outward; it hits resistance), unless you hit the power-unlock button.

Any ideas what may be failing? Any help is much appeciated.

I had the same noise problem in my driver side door. Couldn't lock that particular door with the button, had to manually lock it.

Replaced the door-lock actuator, and problem solved.

I had the same problem, door made a really embarassing squeal every time the door locked/unlocked, and being that it automatically does it at 10 mph, it was quite annoying. It is a crappy, cheap, white plastic gear that is stripped. As was stated above, you have to replace the actuator, and it is a single piece assembly, so the power door lock motor is part of the mechanical lock, so you have to buy the whole unit, and I could only find one at the dealer. You will have to basically take the door apart, but it is a simple bolt on part, labor would be expensive if you had it done by someone else because it takes some time to disassemble the door and pull the lock. Easy to do, just takes time.

I put an aftermarket one on mine..

I think the factory part was around 50-60 bucks, and the one I got and installed was 6 bucks.

I'll see if I can find the brand and a link for it. And some pics, b/c it is not a direct bolt on and plug in.

Yep, I have a 2000 QC, and have 2 doors that are having this same problem. Deactivating the auto lock at 10mph will help to reduce the wear going forward.
Anyone have picts of taking the door apart and replacing the units? Does a Chilton manual give decent instructions?
