I recently bought a Dakota with a 4.7 and I had a couple exhaust questions. I had a 2002 DAkota SXT with a 3.9 and I had a fowmaster 40 and it sounded alright but it was still a V6. I was wondering what you guys thought about a 3 inch dual catback exhaust with a 40 series or should i do a single 3 inch system? How is the sound with this muffler on the 4.7? Should I do single or dual? If this muffler doent sound ood which should I use? I am looking for a healthy sounding V8 at idle and when I get on it.
Thanks.

I've got a 40 series flowmaster on my 4.7 SC 2004 Dakota with dual 2.5's out and it sounds pretty sweet. Not overbearing and won't deafen you in the cab at highway speeds. And it roars when you put the hammer down.

You'll make "mopower" if the system is properly sized to maintain decent exhaust velocity for cylinder scavaging. 3" dual would be too big; that's a good size for a single exhaust for that motor.

Agreed... I have a stainless magnaflow 3 inch SOS (single out side)exhaust on my 4.7. It isnt too loud during normal driving, but has a nice throaty sound to it. When you stand on it, the sound is great

I have a 00 4.7slt with dual cat back 40 series flowmaster and high flow cat and it has a nice tone to it. I was at my local wal mart and pulled in and a guy was standing outside his ford and told me my truck sounded really good, it had a nice tone to it. He said his truck had true duals 40 series and he thought my truck sounded better.

Yup, that set up will give you a powerful sound; and the K&N is even worth a few HP at the highest revs. But if it's actual power you want (that's what I'm more interested in), 3" is bigger than you need for that aplication. 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" dual is all you need for a 4.7. Having your mods work well together is important to maximize power; dual 3" would be more suited to a 440. Sometimes less is more...

I'm with Kowalski on this,
proper pipe size is very important for velocity,
after experimenting a lot with single/duals of different sizes,
nothing gave me more 'usable' power (idle to 4500 rpm) than my current dual 2 1/4" pipes thru a dual in/dual out 70 series Flowmaster.

Larger pipes and 'straight thru' type mufflers
like Magnaflows/glasspacks did give more top end but sacrificed too much MPG and low-end torque.

I've got an 01 4.7 SLT w/ Stick Shift.
Its got a flowmaster 40 1 in 2 out w/ 2-1/4 piping with two 3'' tips. It sounds nice... but i wish it was louder.... I wish i went with the 2-1/2 inch piping w/ 3 1/2 inch tips...

A friend has an 02 SLT w/ the 4.7 with a Glasspack dual 2-1/2 w/ 3-1/2 inch tips... That thing sounds like a 5.9

Fortunately no, those "fast and furious" ricers aren't very popular in the rough hills of westrn MA. More American muscle around where I am.

Many people have debated this and a lot of it has to do with loyalty to a company label. We have personally run Dynomax, MagnaFlow, Flowmaster, Ravin, JBA mufflers and exhaust systems, and found that the single exit systems were slightly better than the dual exit systems...on the Dyno and at the track. The reason for this is that on a single exit system, the exhaust pulses don't fight each other on the exit.

They all sounded good, all performed much better than stock, and all had a slightly different price tag on them. Which one should you use? The one that sounds and looks the best to you. We all have different tastes when it comes to our idea of what sound good so base your opinion on the sound quality...not the advertised flow ratings or who sponsors what race.

A brief note on the advertised flow ratings of mufflers: Mufflers are rated on a Flow bench. This uses a regulated flow rather than the random pulses found in the exhaust stream which doesn't say anything in regards to the performance quality on street driven (or weekend racer) vehicles. So why buy a 1000+CFM muffler that you can see through rather than the chambered style? If you want to spend the money, like the sound, and own a race car (Bracket, Drag, etc.)...by all means, go for it. Just remember, just because you can see through it doesn't mean its any better than a chambered.
