Anyone have any luck with their problems yet. I have a similar issue, when it is cold it hesitates at 1/4 throttle, backfires, etc. When it warms up it is fine. If you don't change the throttle position it will drop down to 1000 rpm and pop away in the exhaust, if you tip the throttle in more it is fine and if you let off of the throttle it is fine. If anyone has any help that would be great, before I start throwing parts at it.

maybe a bad engine temp sensor.

It only hesitates during open loop mode, once the engine warms up it works fine. When the PCM is in open loop it relies on the following sensors: crank position, engine coolant, intake air temp, map, tps, and dist. pick-up(cam). I figure cam and crank are good (it does run). I checked engine coolant and intake air temp sensors and both read the proper resistance for the temp. I checked the map and tps, good ground, 5V ref. is ok, tps output is ok throughout the range when scoped and the map reads ok throughout the range when vacuum applied with a mityvac. All of the readings were checked at the sensors as well as at the PCM. Any other ideas out there? As soon as it goes into open loop it is fine, it runs great. When it is cold it idles rough and during slight to mid acceleration it bogs down unless you open the throttle wide open or let off of the throttle. I also replaced ignition wires(just because I had a new set on the shelf), checked plugs and checked compression(all ok). Replaced intake gaskets(pan gasket was leaking, problem was here before gaskets were replaced), checked fuel pressure. If anyone has any more ideas out there please feel free to post them, I would appreciate anything, thanks.

i had a very similar problem, and after fighting with it it turned out to be the upstream o2 sensor...worth a shot.

I will have to check it out, could be a possibility. I also noticed tonight that if I start it up cold and let it idle it has good vacuum, approx. 18 in.Hg for about a minute or two and then it drops off slowly to about 5 in.Hg and the engine runs rough. It does this for about 30 seconds and then it suddenly runs fine and the vacuum jumps up to 18 in.Hg again and it runs fine after that. Anyways I will check out the O2 sensors tomorrow, I have heard of wiring issues down by the frame rail going to the O2 sensors that sometimes rub through and short to ground, has anyone heard of that before?? Thanks for the info.

I have the same problem on a 1999 Dakota. I have the 318. No mods at all. Completely stock. Now has 307,000 miles. Just starting acting up. Usually only does it within the first couple of miles of driving then it is fine. Shut the truck off and restart after 10-15 minutes same thing runs bad for first couple of miles. Can start it up and let it run in the driveway, then it rpms fall to just barely running and then vroom it picks up on its own then back to normal idle. Driving around 1/4 throttle it spits and backfires. The only way to clear is let of the gas or floor it. Is it pottible the Throttle Body Position sensor?

Scot, you described my exact problem! I have a 1998 Dakota, 318, no mods, 150'000 miles. I checked my tps, voltage is ok. Checked my O2 sensors as Trevor suggested, they are ok as well. I now have my multimeter in my truck with the leads going under the hood and every time I run it when it is cold or sits for a bit I check out a different sensor, everything seems to be ok. Checked tps, map, coolant temp, intake air temp, my sensor ground, my 5 volt reference. Not sure what else to check, I'm sure it has to be a sensor the way it acts, maybe not??? Please keep me posted if you find a problem and I will post anything if I have any luck. I wish the truck would just quit running and then it would be easier to find the problem. Anyways I'll keep you posted.

Mine had an issue like that, had the PCM replaced to fix it. Maybe the same issue???
