Subject: 318 horsepower (stock)
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys, I have a 98 dodge dakota w/ a 318 5 speed. And was wondering around where the horsepower is on this motor. I have done the TPS mod and have it Programmed with the hypertech PP3. If that makes any difference at all. HAHA.

But I am just looking for a close estimate. I get quite a few people that ask about it around the MX track etc. It is a short bed, single cab. (Black) so it is kind of an eye catcher. But im guessing the HP to be between 250-300??? thanks for any input.

Try closer to 230 HP at the crank. The TPS mod is worth no HP, and the programmer should be good for 10. The stock 318 is only rated at 220 hp. The 190 rwhp is probably pretty close with the 5 speed.

saying the 318 in general is false. older magnums, 92-93 had 230hp and maybe 5 more cause of the larger exhaust. all the 318 magnums were rated at 230 hp . the 92-93 had 300 ft-lbs @ 3200rpm and the newer 318's had 295 ft-lbs @ 3200 rpm.

Probably open up the exhaust, add headers, 1.7RR's
and then new gears to top it all off,(for a nice daily driver). That's what I would do if money allowed.

Good luck

Here is a cheap and easy mod you can do to the 318...

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/317659/2

I don't know what it does for power except that the difference is noticeable. Just be warned it may not be legal in some areas I think.

That air cleaner link, sucks up whatever hot air is under the hood.

And, the 5.2, will have more than 200ft/lbs or torque at the flyheel, even more than 200 at the Rear wheel.

The air cleaner works fine for me; at least it is bettter than stock and was less than 100 dollars!

And it will suck up hot air under the hood when at low speeds and idle but once I get moving, the underhood temperature lowers to the outside temperature.

You know what?

You're probably right.

Mine gets it from the stock area which comes from the Rt fender well, which comes from the windshield cowl on my 2001, even though it is modified quite a bit. Would a dyno see a difference? Probably not, it's the general principal thing.

I'm glad it works for you, I'm sure it won't be a problem.

It is funny because just a month ago I had put the original factory air intake on to get it inspected.

I only had the factory intake on for a half tank of gas. When I calculated my gas mileage come fill up time with the low fuel light on; my MPG was 14.7 which is a little over one mpg worse than the normal. In fact, up until then(earlier this month), I hadn't gotten less than 15.2mpg since late last year.

And I could tell a definate difference in performance too. The truck was noticeably slower.

I just ordered a Superchips programmer tonight. It will hopefully be here by Tuesday. I can't wait to see what my MPG does with it set in economy mode.

I forgot to add I have 2 and 1/4 or 1/2 inch exhaust from the headers back. I don't remember the exact size?? But my cat is gutted and after that it I have a 18" glass back then splits into duals with 3 inch tips. Sounds great. Does anyone make good headers that fit right and don't leak?

But anyways how do the 1.7 Roller Rockers add performance? and where do i get them ?

And while we are on the air filter subject. I had the edlebrock triangle one that is supposed to flow like 1700cfm. or something like that. It added a little performance/ throttle response. But the damn thing didn't seal !! I don't hit very many dirt roads but I still had to trash it. I would hate to fry my valves/top end! I put my stock airbox unit on with a new filter. And it seemed like my mileage drastically increased. And I think it still runs just as good. My average was around 17-20 with the edlebrock. I will have to test the stock setup and see what I get.

If that's an '03 as you say, then you probably don't have a 318. They stopped putting that motor in Dakotas after '99. If you have the 4.7 v8, with those mods, horsepower will be about the same as stock.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way
