For three stinkin' years this truck has been in
the catalogue and I have never seen one nor has
a dealer, in 3 states, seen one. I want to test
drive one, and have been interrupted, but not in
all this time have I seen one. Two dealers just
tried to order them and got rejected, maybe because of model changeover at this time. Is this
truck a MYTH??, a bait and switch to get you in
the dealer? I have now found Nissan Frontier with
a 6 speed and almost as much tow capacity, V-6.

The reason a given dealer won't stock manual tranny trucks is because they are slow movers in the marketplace; fewer potential customers. I have seen several 4.7 6-speed Rams, but compared to 4 years ago, Dakota sales are way off (27%), so less Dakota selection, period. In 2001, I did a 4-hour search of Dodge.com/new inventory, and found only three 4.7 NV3500 RC's within 200 miles. In a total model year, one local dealer would order a grand total of ONE 4.7 manual tranny Dakota (pre-2005). Today: none.

Thats because most weaners can,t shift for themselfs. That aside- Is the 6 speed as good as the 3500? Will it retro fit? Most important- what are the overdriver rates for 5th and 6th. I,m always reaching for another gear above fifth in the 3500.

Well, most of these factory vehicle locate sites
are hard to use, or will only search locally,
while some vehicles, catalogued, such as 5 speed
Solara coupe, are only sold in certain regions,
which means, you have to drive miles and across
country, to find something you'd be caught dead
driving or switch, radically, in makes. The sites
seem destined to chase you away, rather than help
you find THE vehicle YOU want, WHEREVER it may
be..I wanta know if there is an '07 4.7 6 Speed
Dakota ANYWHERE in the continental U.S.that I can
test drive, or is Nissan Frontier "it" to tow a
loaded car trailer? (no Model T transmissions
allowed)

well, from what i'm getting trying to select the 4.7/6speed combo on www.dodge.com. that option is not available. every time i select the 4.7 when i select 6spd manual it changes the engine back to the 3.7 v6. and that's in any model ST, SLT or Laramie. that sucks.

Okay, I guess I need to know if ANY were ever built..in those years, 3 at least, that they
appeared in the catalogues? (to stave up an equally fruitless search of the USED truck market)
2005, 2006, maybe not 2007? Anybody out there
actually OWN one? Now I guess I have to wonder
if RAM can still be bought with this
combination..and more useless sheet metal/weight to drag around behind that engine?

This is a sad situation if there are no 4.7 6-speed Dakotas. Hopefully, Chrysler's new owners will be more "consumer friendly".
I did see one 2005 Ram 2wd 4.7 6-speed. It was a slow seller that carried over to the 2006 model year for a local dealer.
In this time of $3+ gas, you would think there would be more demand for manual tranny trucks. I know I feel fortunate every day to have my '01 RC 4.7 NV3500 that gets 20 mpg overall.

Well, a LOT of time on the computer using the
cumbersome Dodge dealer search, after being told
by a local dealer that some WERE made in 2006,
scared up several left over ones. They are few and far between, and I located none in this state, or several neighboring states. I will phone today to see if the few still exist. Others, not posted by the dealer, may exist, but where?

Gardner, When they couldn't find one like my build sheet of of edmunds.com for me, they ordered my dak, exactly the way I wanted it.

Why can't you just oprder it? Don't pay over invoice price either.

Good luck

Hey Todd, I think Garner would be out of luck going the build route unless he wants an ST. At least for my ZIP code I can only spec a V8/6speed combo for an ST. Being spoiled with my fully loaded SLT QC I'm inclined to think ST means "Sh!tty Truck"...

I just bought a leftover '06 Dakota SLT Quad Cab 2wd, 4.7 6-speed manual. I got it for a screaming deal obviously b/c of the combination.

Quite a truck - I'd recommend.

Fantastic! Too bad it's got a 3.21 axle ratio (standard) or a 3.55 (optional). It needs 3.92s.

What goodies does it have, and how much $$$ did you get it for???

Sorry modain about the delay in my response. It's got the 3.55 gear and really needs at least 3.73s or more. It's pretty loaded up, with the SLT Value Package, Trailer Towing Package, heated seats, etc. Sticker price was at $27,5xx and change. I got it at a little more than $10K off of sticker. Worth it methinks.

Sounds you you made a big-time score. Spend the money to get 3.92s and and LSD unit if it doesn't already have one. (I have not come across anyone offering 3.73 gears for the 8.25" and 9.25" axles.) With that gearing you would proably never need to use 1st gear outside of towing anything heavy, and it would be geard perfectly for towing heavy loads (not to mention the lightning fast accelleration you'd have).

For that price I'd even bring myself to consider owning one of the new Dakotas. I'm one of the folks who think the GenIII styling is great and was disappointed with the GenIV's new styling. It's all subjective. :-)

The Gen 3 dak, is actually a Gen 2, making the newest ones the Gen 3. I used to think different also.

Yeah, I know the generation terminology is a little different depending upon the forum. On this board it has been the usual case to refer to the 1997-2004 Dakota as a GenIII.

There is a debate concerning the generation break during the years 1986-1996. Some folks contend when the 6-lug wheels and V8 enginges were intruduced that constitued a change to GenII.
