Subject: Oil pump issue on 318
IP: Logged

Message:
since i had my 318 the oil pressure seemed good. usually somewhere around the middle of the gage or a tad bit higher when rpm's where up, maybe a little lower at idle. anyways, the other day i changed my radiator out cause it was corroded, and immediatly after that the oil pressure was considerably higher. at idle it runs a little past the middle of the gage and after that it runs 3/4 or higher up the gage. seems pretty high to me. im wondering why this would happen and if there is something wrong with the pump or a pressure regulator if there is one.
btw, before this happened, i had a weird tapping sound that doesnt seem to happen anymore.

perhaps it was the because the corroded radiator wasn't cooling like it was supposed to. now the engine is cooler, oil is cooler and oil pressure would be up a little.

perhaps, but that doesnt explain why its like that from a cold start. it wasnt like that from a cold start before.

This may soun silly But is there any way the senders for water/oil are crossed. Not even sure this would be possible but your problem some how has to be self inflected. If you really were getting better cooling it would have to be a lot to change oil pressure that much and had the old radiator been plugged that bad, you would have over heating if not on hot days then going over a pass on a hot day. Reexamine your work carefully. Just keep in mined, it was ok before you worked on it. not unusual to get a bit excited and go places you need not go. Disconnecting the battery and reconnecting might play in to this even though I can see no reason how or why.

The guages are useless for what you are trying to find out/see. Hook up a real guage and read what your pressure is and if it is in spec.

Probably just a fluke thing with no reasoning and not any real pressure change.
